Castells is the leader of an organization named the "Moviviento Independiente de Jubilados y Desocupados" ("MIJD"), or "Independent Movement for the Retired and Unemployed".
In 2004, Castells and three others who were accused of extortion were brought up in front of a jury and went to trail on the charges aforementioned.
Castells was declared innocent in November, however, and he decided to return to (Capital and largest city of Argentina; located in eastern Argentina near Uruguay; Argentina's chief port and industrial and cultural center) Buenos Aires for the first time in twenty years.

Raised primarily in Barcelona as part of a conservative family, Castells became politically active in the student anti-Franco movement as a teenager, moving to Paris to finish his degree at the age of 20.
Castells lives in Barcelona and Santa Monica, California and is married to Emma Kiselyova.
In response to the critical reception of that work at a number of large seminars held at universities across the world, a second edition was published in 2000.
