Topic: Castellum

In the News (Wed 24 Apr 19)

  Places of interest
It was probably built onto the wall of the castellum, upon the remains of which the walls of the nave and the sacristy now stand (on the side towards Stiftsherrenstrasse).
The church was the centre of the Deanery of Jülich encompassing in the 13th century 71 churches in the Jülich, Düren, Eschweiler and Geilenkirchen districts as well as in Burtscheid, a suburb of Aachen.
The northwest corner of the castellum, which was used well into the Middle Ages, was probably in the region of an elevated terrace (wall, mound of earth) in a backyard between upper Kleine Rurstrasse and Raderstrasse.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 1998.11.26
Though dominated by domestic architecture, the cityscape is characterized also by the defenses of castellum towers and an enclosure wall, the imperial markers of a Roman Praetorium and provincial temple, and fourteen Byzantine churches.
The later castellum, also referred to as the "barracks," consists of rooms surrounding a central courtyard, and two towers that survive to a second storey.
Despite its solid, durable construction, the later castellum signaled a reduced military presence in the thriving town, affirming that locals in frontier towns depended on tribal federations for protection.

 Wieringer history, the Roman era
They built along and north of the borderriver Rhine a series of fortresses of which Castellum Flevum was the largest and best known of the northwest borderarea.
The legendary Grebbe was also a candidate location for the Castellum, with possible alternative Hippolytushoef.
The Castellum Flevum is especially known because the Romans had to deal with a large Frisian uprising against the heavy taxation in the year 28 A.D. When the Romans increased the taxes, which the local people paid in hides, the Frisians revolted.

Interpretation of Umm el-Jimal History -- Part I
At the end of the 3rd c., the earlier (tetrarchic) castellum (de Vries 1986: 231-32, 1993c: 445-46) was constructed.
Although the meaning of the term burgus (PES 111: 132-4) is not necessarily identical with castellum, the inscription of 371 mentioning the construction of a burgus by the equites IX Dalmatae may be better associated with this castellum (Parker 1986: 26) than with the Praetorium ( see note).
Whereas the previous fort, the tetrarchic castellum, was a selfcontained fortified unit, its primary function being the defense of a frontier sector (Parker 1986: 26-27), the new fort, though still defensible, was located within the already secured perimeter of the town wall.

Vitruvius description of a tripartite castellum divided up into private, public, and bath supply lines was largely accepted as true (or at least useful) until the 1990s.
This function is in place in the case of visiting dignitaries (who might be met at the gate and presented ritually with permission to enter), triumphal re-entries, and it may also apply to the piercing of Roman walls.
Particularly because Roman walls were afforded a sacerdotal nature, the castellum as entry point may have served as a ritual delimiter for the aqueduct.

In order to remove impurities and parcticulate matter from the flow, settling tanks (piscinae) were installed at various points between the source and castellum.
Subsidiary lines (ramus) were also employed along the course, in order to augment the capacity of the line or cool the temperature of the water.
Once collected in the distribution tank, the water was carried out to various places through lead or tile pipes (fistulae), that were connected to the castellum by a "delivery nozzle" (calix).

The overall fall was only 15 m from the source to the castellum divisorium (distribution basin) in uptown Nimes which gives the aqueduct one of the flattest gradients among the Romans aqueduct.
The distribution basin — in Latin: castellum divisorium — is world known and one of the few of its kind (an other famous one is located near the Versuvius gate in Pompeii).
Here the open conduit system was replaced by 10 [lead?] pipes (a closed system) of 0.30 m in diameter, each of them with a specific function and/or for distribution of the water to specific areas in the town.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2002.11.13
Until now the passage in Vitruvius was interpreted and thereafter used to explain the castellum of Pompeii, and the water tower of Pompeii was declared to be a typical construction with regards to all other castella.
According to this interpretation the basin should consist of three connected pipes arranged on three different levels to favour the public water supply and to put at a disadvantage the private users in case of lack of water.
Now there was the possibility to regulate the water quantity with a rake (to remove rubbish) and a plate with a horizontal opening (which could also be closed within a short time by plugging it up).

Oculus: Virtually a Tour of a Desert Fort - Part 1
The castellum is very close to square, with a three-storey tower at each corner, and a single gateway in the centre of the south-western wall which, like its companions, is about 55m long.
This type of castellum is a classic form (known as the quadraburgium) of the eastern provinces and is probably not Roman in origin, but it was certainly copied by later powers, as with some of the Islamic desert palaces or the police posts of the Turkish or British periods.
There is a postern or sally port immediately east of the tower, while rubble to the north-west of the castellum is all that is left of extramural buildings, probably contemporary.

Most of the spring water conveyed by aqueduct to the Beit HaMikdash flowed into holding tanks and was allowed to stand for a period of time to let mud and other impurities settle.
Since the water in the aqueduct was not pressurized, the water level in the castellum could not be higher than that in the aqueduct from which it came.
From the castellum, the water flowed into smaller tanks that fed into a system of pipes which distributed the water throughout the Mikdash.
