Machine Tool Industry in Brazil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In 1991, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay formed the Mercosul (Southern Common Market) and in 1995 the Mercosul countries established the Common External Tariff (CET), which are the import tariffs applicable to imports from all countries outside of the Mercosul region.
Brazil's market liberalization and participation in the Mercosul is encouraging vehicle manufacturers to adjust their strategy from focusing on the formerly protected Brazil market, to manufacture vehicles that compete in an open local market as well as in export markets.
The import tariff on machine tools in Brazil is scheduled to drop to 19% in 1999, 18% in the year 2000 and 17% in the year 2001 and reach the CET.

 The Brazil and Argentina page
Brazil and Argentina have reached the conclusion that they have more in common than not, and that their shared interests are much greater than their problems with each other.
Brazil had in fact established a colony at Sacramento across from Buenos Aires, and Monte Video was, for a time, part of the Brazilian Empire.
Two things make this rivalry even more acute: the fact that Brazil is the planet earth's premier soccer country, with the most world cups and greatest players, and the fact that only one country in the whole world has a positive balance in wins-to-loses with Brazil and that is, of course, Argentina.

In 1965, I said goodbye to Brazil, after two years of working with the Compania National da Merenda Escolar, the National School Lunch Program in the State of Espirito Santo.
This time I was alone, but the view of Brazil from the air was familiar: The lush green of the Atlantic Rainforest, broken by patches of rusty red soil, Corcovado with its statue standing guard over Rio, and the beautiful bay.
When we arrive in Castelo, which a grown five fold, the most remarkable sight was a Castle standing on the main square.
