	Sicily, Trapani, Castelvetrano
		The origins of Castelvetrano date back to the ancient Sican population of Legum and then to the colonies of so called veterans of Selinunte who were destined to take custody of the victuals (this gives origin to the name of the town "castrum veteranorum").
		In 1299 Castelvetrano became the property of the Tagliavia family who were to be the future princes of the city, their surname would change to Aragon, then Pignatelli, between the end of the XV century and the beginning of the XVI.
		Castelvetrano became the capital of the Tagliavia-Aragon territories, enhancing itself with various works of art.

		Castelvetrano, counting some 30,000 inhabitants, is a farming town primarily concerned with the cultivation of vines and olive trees; woodworking, mostly related to the furniture industry, is as much important.
		The focal centre of Castelvetrano hinges on two adjacent squares, Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Garibaldi, and it is in this part of the town that the main monuments are to be found.
		Piazza Garibaldi — The square is lined with fine buildings such as the town’s main church and the Chiesa del Purgatorio (now an auditorium), the latter an elegant conglomeration of elaborate detail (Classical friezes, false balcony, statues nestling in niches, volutes) drawn from a transitional late Mannerist-Baroque style.

	Churches & Artifacts: Castelvetrano
		Creek palmettes adorn the terminal frieze of the Magdalene chapel behind, while the centre is dominated by a shield with a palmtree, the emblem of the Tagliavias, who were the patrons of the chapel.
		The statue bronze found in the year 1882 in street Galera and brought to Castelvetrano's town for the sum 500 liras is cm.
		The statue restored in the 1926 was stolen in Castelvetrano's town in the 1962 and found in the 1968.

		Secondo la tradizione l'origine di Castelvetrano risalirebbe alle antiche popolazioni sicane di Legum e successtvamente alle colonie di veterani selinuntini destinati alla custodia delle derrate (da cui l'antico nome "castrum veteranorum").
		E' nel 1299 che Castelvetrano viene assegnata da Federico D'Aragona ai Tagliavia, il cui cognome si muterà nel tempo in Aragona e Pignatelli.
		Primo fra tutti Giovanni Gentile, nato a Castelvetrano nel 1875, che affiancò alla carriera di filosofo l'attività politica, ricoprendo cariche ufficiali durante il periodo fascista.

	Palazzo Pignatelli - Castelvetrano
		Quando i Tagliavia decisero di stabilirsi definitivamente a Castelvetrano, chiesero e ottennero nella loro investitura, oltre alla baronia e alla "terra" di Castelvetrano, anche il castello.
		Conclusi i lavori, la fabbrica doveva apparire splendida e imponente per la sua altezza, con le quattro robuste torri angolari (di cui una ottagonale), la merlatura e il fossato con ponte levatoio che metteva il castello in contatto con la piazza; si costruì inoltre la sala delle udienze, una splendida sala d'armi e una biblioteca.
		Verso la fine del XVII secolo, i principi di Castelvetrano, divenuti intanto Aragona Pignatelli, trasferirono la loro stabile dimora a Palermo e a Napoli: cominciò, così, per il palazzo un lento ed inesorabile declino.

	La linea Castelvetrano - San Carlo
		Il primo tratto aperto è stato quello tra Castelvetrano e Partanna, inaugurato il 20 giugno 1910 insieme con l’altra linea per Selinunte, poi prolungata fino a Porto Empedocle.
