Castle AFB, the city of Atwater, and the Merced Irrigation District are the three principal users of groundwater on or near Castle AFB (Gutierrez-Palmenberg, 1997; Jacobs, 1996a).
Based on data from the last year the base was open, approximately 2,000 gpm were used in the summer, while approximately 1,000 gpm were used in the winter.
The excavated landfill debris is being disposed of on-base in Landfill 4 (LF-4).

The Strategic Air Command assumed responsibility for the base in 1946.
The EPA currently has this base listed on their database due to the bulk wastes such as solvents, oils, fuels, and sludges which were disposed in pits at landfills around the base until 1977.
Castle is now a general aviation airport (with an 11,800 foot runway), according to the Merced County transit agency.

 Military Base Closures: The Impact on California Communities
While communities clearly gained benefits from nearby military bases in the past, the future effects of shutting down these bases are difficult to gauge, and policymakers want to be sure that whatever governmental assistance they provide to affected communities is truly needed.
In the latest rounds of base closures that began in 1989, a total of 163 bases nationwide with 119,000 military and civilian personnel have been marked for closure.
They selected those bases because of their large presence in the local community and because the communities were sufficiently isolated geographically that the effects of the closures were expected to be both severe and measurable.

In 1954 the Air Force purchased the first 29 of its future fleet of 732.
The first aircraft flew in August 1956 and the initial-production Stratotanker was delivered to Castle Air Force Base, Calif., in June 1957.

Frederick Castle rode his flaming B-17 to his death while leading the biggest bombing mission of World War II during the Battle of the Bulge.

The 93rd Bomb Group flew B-24s with the 8th Air Force and was instrumental in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

When the closure of Castle Air Force Base was announced in 1994, a group of dedicated enthusiasts in the Atwater-Merced area formed a non-profit organization called the Castle Air Museum Foundation, Inc. Their purpose was to assume custody of the collection of aircraft.
The Castle Air Museum has prepared a guide for teacher's and educators that is a comprehensive booklet containing a variety of informative sections from the Castle Museum background, to classroom activities and worksheets for 4th to 6th graders.
The Castle Air Museum stands as a tribute to the men and women of the past who put their lives on the line for our freedom.

Colonel Tom Gilbert commands the 5th Operations Group at Minot Air Force Base, N.D.
