The Ashby canal passes through the town and the Leicester and Burton railway once connected Ashby with the rest of the country through the growing rail network with a station near to the Ivanhoe baths.
The manor of Ashby began as a wooden Norman castle and it was converted to stone by Alan la Zouch, whose family continued to see the castle and hamlet prosper.
During the Civil War the castle was under siege for a whole year and was defended by Royalists despite being attacked by the commonwealth soldiers based at the nearby Coleorton Garrison.

Ashby Castle forms the backdrop to the famous jousting scenes in Sir Walter Scott's classic novel of 1819, Ivanhoe.
It only achieved castle status in the 15th century, by which time the hall and buttery had been enlarged, with a solar to the east and a large integral kitchen added to the west.
Later the castle hosted many royal visitors, including Henry VII, Mary Queen of Scots, James I and Charles I. A Royalist stronghold during the Civil War, the castle finally fell to Parliament in 1646, and was then made unusable.

The Zouche held the town until 1399 but although members of the family fought at Crecy and served their monarchs well, it remained in the backwater of national affairs.
They did improve the manor house, building in stone a hall, solar and outbuildings, much of which can still be seen as part of the larger castle.
The manor changed hands on several occasions in the 15th century, finally coming into the possession of James Butler, Earl of Wiltshire who fought for the Lancastrians at the Battle of Towton and was beheaded after that defeat.

The history of Castle Ashby begins in the 11th century, when Judith, niece of William the Conqueror, married Waltherof, Earl of Northampton and Huntingdon, and the King granted her several manors in the neighbourhood.
The original castle was pulled down and the Ashby Estates were acquired by Sir William Compton, ancestor of the present owner, in 1512.
The present owner of Castle Ashby is the 7th Marquess of Northampton, a direct descendant of Sir William Compton.

It was Hastings who built the present castle with its 90 foot tower and 9 foot thick walls.
Trouble was, Hastings was on the wrong side in the Civil War and after the castle was besieged and the Parliamentarians were in power, they decided it should never pose a threat again so it was 'slighted' (made unusable by demolishing vital walls) and this is how you see it today.
The castle is near where you enter and leave the start/finish field.
