The prefix was subsequently added from "the Castle," the meagre remains of which still crown the extremity of a hill about a quarter of a mile west of the town; but which, when entire, must have proudly overlooked the combe, or narrow valley, where the church and the principal part of the village are built.
Extent contained in an ancient Chartulary or Book of Evidences preserved at Castle Combe, chiefly in the handwriting of William of Worcester, who was Surveyor of this manor between the years 1430 and 1465, and which we shall have frequent occasion to refer to.
The parish of Castle Combe is conterminous with the manor.

In 1949, the Bristol MC and LCC used to hold race meetings at Lulsgate Airfield (now Bristol Airport), but after the RAC had problems gaining approval for race meetings it was decided to use the perimeter track of the former wartime airfield of Castle Combe.
After negotiations were completed, the first race meeting was held on the 8th July, 1950, although spectators were not allowed.

Castle Combe has been somewhat modified in 1999, increasing the length of the circuit slightly (now 1.85 miles) and reducing speeds on the two long straights by the introduction of a pair of chicanes (the Esses and Bobbies).
The rest of the circuit is almost flat-out driving, lifting for some of the corners with heavy braking needed only for Quarry and Tower (in addition to the chicanes).
There is petrol just outside the circuit to the East, Castle Combe village is great.

Marketing Director Mr Rodney Gooch stated it was not fair or feasible to expect teams to participate at a non-championship event prior to the final round of the BSB championship, and decent weather may greet us being in the middle of the year.
The Chairman of Castle Combe, Mr Howard Strawford, commented that the circuit management are in the process of talking to all the BSB teams to encourage a strong entry list for the event.

Combe offers a great oportunity for testing and car setup, not too much in the way of a challenge, but plenty of overtaking room in a race.
The only challenge at Combe is through Avon Rise into Quarry - a braking nightmare...
