 Naval Technology - River Class Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV)
The River Class has a Robertson AP9 MkIII autopilot and is fitted with an integrated navigation and communications suite supplied by Marine Electronics Supplies.
The River Class is equipped with a Rhode and Schwarz military communications suite operating in HF/VHF and UHF bands, Furuno maritime VHF communications set, INMARSAT-B satellite communications and GMDSS Area A3 military communications.
The vessel will replace the Castle Class HMS Leeds Castle and HMS Dumbarton Castle OPVs and will have an aft helicopter flight deck for up to Merlin sized helicopters, a larger 30mm gun and Terma Scanter 4100 surveillance radar.

In February 2005, the UK Ministry of Defence placed a contract with Vosper for a further vessel, a variant of the River Class, to act as the Falkland Islands Patrol Vessel.

Flown down to give us, HMS LEEDS CASTLE, HMS GLASGOW and RFA GOLD ROVER a run through their paces, they embarked on HMS ENDURANCE on Friday the 23rd Jan. A morning of training, followed by a long afternoon of a main machinery space fire exercise was our lot.
We joined HMS GLASGOW and HMS LEEDS CASTLE in Mare Harbour (East Cove, at around 1600), and began the usual transfer of stores and equipment, that extended into a busy 24 hours.
One of his first tasks on board was to resent a Long Service and Good Conduct medal to PO Paul Oliver, the communications specialist on board, upon whom we all rely for sending and receiving emails, amongst other communications to the outside world.
