The Douglas Heart - The Legendary Story of James Douglas and Robert The Bruce   (Site not responding. Last check: )
It is likely that Douglas saw Spain as the first stage of a long journey for he had, we know, allocated seven years to the fulfilment of his promise to Bruce.
Tradition has it that Douglas, realising that he could not escape, took Bruce's heart from the casket about his neck and flung it ahead of him into the midst of the Moors, crying: "Forward, brave heart, as ever thou were wont to do, and Douglas will follow thee or die".
Douglas' bones, too, were returned to Scotland by William Keith and placed in the Church of St Bride in Douglasdale.

Traditions and Stories of Scottish Castles - Threave Castle
THREAVE CASTLE, Kirkcudbrightshire, is a ruin connected with the famous Douglas family, and is a lofty stronghold on an island of the river Dee, less than two miles west of Castle Douglas.
Threave Castle was erected by him on the site of a fortalice that had belonged to Alan, the last native Lord of Galloway; and in the time of the eighth Earl of Douglas (about 1450) it is recorded that there was accommodation within Threave Castle for a thousand men-at-arms.
When Threave Castle was forfeited by the Earl of Douglas, it was conferred on the Maxwells, another prominent Border family, who were afterwards ennobled with the title of Earls of Nithsdale, and were made Keepers of Threave and Stewards of Kirkcudbright.

 CastleXplorer - Threave Castle
Archaeological evidence does seem to suggest that there was an earlier castle on the site, which by tradition was the residence of Fergus, Lord of Galloway, and his descendants from the mid 11th century onwards, and was probably destroyed by Robert the Bruce in 1308.
The castle's ability to stand up to such an attack was probably due to the artillery fortification that was built around the tower house shortly before 1455.
The castle was slighted and partly dismantled, but was still substantial enough in the early 19th century to act as a prison for French troops captured during the Napoleonic wars.

Castle Dangerous, or “The Perilous Castle of Douglas.” So called because it was thrice taken from the English between 1306 and 1307.
The castle being restored was placed under the guard of Thirwall, but Douglas disguised his soldiers as drovers, and Thirwall resolved to “pillage the rogues.” He set upon them to drive off the herds, but the “drovers,” being too strong for the attacking party, overpowered them, and again Douglas made himself master of the castle.

 Reconstruction of Dirleton Castle
Not forgetting the castle itself which contained five round towers, three being D-shaped in plan and two Donjon type with a further two square plan towers all connected by a battlement wall hugging the rock knoll giving the confused plan we see today.
By 1311, Dirleton was re-captured by the Scots and in accord with King Robert the Bruce's policy of slighting castles to prevent their use by the English, three of the great towers were thrown down to almost ground level and the upper levels of the remaining towers partly torn away.
Surprisingly, a few years later in 1363 Douglas and Dunbar turned on the Halyburtons and seized Dirleton castle in their first steps of rebellion against King David II of Scots for his attack on Kildrummy castle.
