Castle Falkenstein (role-playing game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Castle Falkenstein was an innovative steampunk-themed fantasy role-playing game designed by Mike Pondsmith and originally published by R.
A GURPS version (GURPS Castle Falkenstein) and several supplements were later published by Steve Jackson Games.
Being a game narrated by a fictional character who claims authorship of the game, Castle Falkenstein (which won the Origins Award in 1994 and the Findley Memorial Award in 1995) is therefore likely to be the first recursive and postmodern roleplaying game ever published.

 Castle Falkenstein Review
Castle Falkenstein is a tough game to categorize, because it has so many facets.
Likewise, Castle Falkenstein doesn't use dice, because these are the mark of low-class riff-raff in Victorian times: people of breeding and taste play cards, and so do players of Castle Falkenstein.
Castle Falkenstein has little use for armor: cuirasses and helmets are mainly for show.

 THE CASTLES OF THE OUR-VALLEY,
The Castle of Falkenstein, truly a hawk's nest perched on a rock above the lake of the our dam, seems to have been constructed in the 12th century by the counts of Vianden.
The Castle of Roth, situated south of Vianden, was built at the beginning of the 13th century by the TempIars, to whom the count of Vianden had assigned the Roth Basilica.
The Castle of Brandenbourg, in the valley of the river Blees, was built in the tenth century and used to dominate the tract of land in between Vianden and Bourscheid.

Falkenstein by FUDGE (c) September 2005
We maintain the cost and the modifiers of the spells the same as in Falkenstein, and we subtract the sorcerer's ability in FUDGE adding 4 to it and multiplying the result by 2 (which gives us a result between 2 and 14).
This gives us a result between 2 and 14, the same as the range in Falkenstein, but it is not linear (the most probable result is 8) neither we can obtain odd values (3, 5, 7,..., 13).
This way to check the occurrence of Wild magic is not the same as that of Falkenstein, which has a smaller probability of happening (at least while there are still around 30 cards) and it also varies according to the number of cards there are left.

It's Castle Falkenstein, an amazing journey into another universe just a few steps away from our own: a place where Dragons and Steampower rule the skies, Faerie Lords duel atop the battlements, and where the forces of Wizardry and Magick meet the gaslight streets of the Victorian Age.
But with Castle Falkenstein the story never ends, as you too take up sabre and spell to adventure in a distant world on the other side of the mysterious Faerie Veil: a world of swashbuckling fantasy, high romance, and magickal technology.

RPGnet: Review of GURPS Castle Falkenstein
GURPS Castle Falkenstein is an adaptation of the Castle Falkenstein game to GURPS rules.
Other areas described are North America (somewhat fragmented in the Falkenstein reality--- the Native Americans have enough magic available to be able to repel settlers), South America, with mention of Mexico, Brazil, and the still extant Maya and Inca Empires (magic is again the explanation), China, India, Japan, and Australia and New Zealand.
