Castle Fraser was built between 1575 and 1635 but since then there have been alterations in the early 19th century and the addition of a grand staircase in Victorian times (though this was demolished after the Second World war).
In the 15th century, Thomas Fraser was granted the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood and originally the castle bore the name of Muchall-in-Mar (until 1695).
The castle and estate passed through a number of heirs, not always in a direct line and the last Fraser to own the property never lived in it as he became Privy Chamberlain to the Pope and then Master of Ceremonies at St Peter's in Rome.

Fraser's Dragoones are a regiment within the Sealed Knot and as such we hope to "Entertain, inform, and engender an interest in the events and times of the Civil Wars." In practice that means performing in battle re-enactments, living history displays, drill displays and giving talks to interested parties.
Frasers from all over the world attended this major event and it was both hard work and great fun.
We have done small living history and drill displays on a number of occasions at Castle Fraser but this was the big one.
