The quarry is located along the northwest corner of Castle Harbour, Bermuda where the bedrock consists of the highly cavernous Walsingham limestone formation of early Pleistocene or late Pliocene age.
Having spent 11 years in Bermuda, investigating the biology of this island's caves, I was invited to visit the cave and evaluate its significance for the Bermuda Dept. of Conservation Services.
Furthermore, because the submerged portions of most of Bermuda's caves are interconnected, especially those of the Walsingham area, damage to one cave from blasting, siltation or water exchange blockage is likely to have a detrimental impact on most or all adjoining caves, endangering a significant portion of Bermuda's endemic organisms.

Bermuda's marine caves readily qualify as a biodiversity hotspot of global significance due to their remarkably rich and diverse community of cave-limited animals.
Even on a small island like Bermuda, caves are not evenly distributed; most of the 150 known caves are located in the narrow strip of land separating Harrington Sound from Castle Harbour where the island's oldest limestone is exposed.
The four primary threats to Bermuda caves are: (i) construction and quarrying activities, (ii) water pollution, (iii) dumping and littering, and (iv) vandalism.

This 3-acre island near the entrance of Castle Harbour, barren except for a few stunted cedars and tricky to get onto, is the site of the ruins of King's Castle, once the main fortification of 17th-century Bermuda.
The earliest reference to a coinage for Bermuda is found in the commission granted by the Virginia Company to Governor Moore in 1612.

In July 2004, the Bermuda Biological Station was awarded a Bermuda Government Environmental Grant Scheme to support a research project into the health and ecology of sea grass beds around Bermuda, the causes of their decline and the potential for remediation.
It was the original home in Bermuda of the first planned settlers and they even made rock ovens for their food from the local limestone until they moved to St. George's Island and the Town of St. George in the summer and autumn of 1612.
