Castle Hill, Mere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Castle Hill is a fairly small yet noticeably steep hill rising from the Northwestern side of Mere, Wiltshire, England.
Apparently, the sides of the hill were artificially steepened, and it is generally supposed this was done for defensive reasons, but it is unknown whether this was done in medieval times or earlier, maybe even during the megalithic period.
In this respect, Castle Hill may be compared with other unusual hills in Britain, such as Silbury Hill in Wiltshire.

Cadbury Castle: Britannia's Guide to Arthurian Sites
Cadbury is an isolated hill of limestone and sandstone.
The areas resettled within their ramparts were much smaller; none became a base for substantial forces; and while, in a few, a little feeble wall- building was carried out, none acquired a new fortification remotely like the stone-and-timber rampart of Cadbury, with its gatehouse and implied use of the whole 18-acre enclosure.
In such cases there seldom is. But a visitor who knew the hill well pointed out a place in the scarp on the south side of the central plateau, where a metal rod could be thrust horizontally far into the soil without hitting bedrock.

 Scrope's history of Castle Combe
The prefix was subsequently added from "the Castle," the meagre remains of which still crown the extremity of a hill about a quarter of a mile west of the town; but which, when entire, must have proudly overlooked the combe, or narrow valley, where the church and the principal part of the village are built.
The parish of Castle Combe is conterminous with the manor.
The southern and western portion of the parish, consisting of a long tongue-shaped hill, cut off by the valley from the rest, and which now comprehends the Shrub Farm, was in part a deer-park, and the remainder a wild and rough scrubby common of pasture called The Shrub (scrobes).
