The last of the Menzies family line died in 1918 (though in 1957 the Lyon Court was petitioned by Ronald Steuart Menzies (a branch of the Culdares family of Menzies) and he was awarded the name and arms of Menzies of that Ilk (clan chief).
Castle Menzies was owned by a number of families in the 20th century and during WW2, it was used by the Polish army.
Castle Menzies is in the heart of Perthshire at a place called Weem, a few miles west of Aberfeldy in the valley of the river Tay.

In 1644 the castle was probably involved when the Chief, Sir Alexander Menzies of Menzies, having declined to support the Royalist cause, had temerity to harass the forces of Montrose as they passed though Weem on their way to the Lowlands and in 1646 the castle was occupied by General Monk's forces.
Castle Menzies remained the seat of the Menzies of Weem until the death of the last of the main line of that family in 1918.

From the former of these is descended the family of Menzies of Castle Menzies, but that of Menzies of Fortingal terminated in an heiress, by whose marriage with James Stewart, a natural son of the Wolf of Badenoch, the property was transferred to the Stewarts.
Castle Menzies, the principal modern seat of the chief, stands to the east of Loch Tay, in the parish and near to the church of Weem, in Perthshire.
In November, 1778, Sir Robert Menzies executed an entail of the estates and baronies of Menzies and Rannoch, and at his death without issue in 1786 the title and possessions of the house reverted to his kinsman, John Menzies, grandson of Captain James Menzies of Comrie, second son of the first baronet.

With the burning of the castle all early records of the origin of the Menzies were destroyed.
With the extinction of the main Menzies of Weem line, the Clan was therefore without a Chief until Ronald Stewart-Menzies of Culdares and Arndilly, the lineal heir of Col.James Menzies of Culdares, cousin of the first baronet, in 1957 petitioned Lyon Court and obtained arms in the name and title of "The Menzies of Menzies).
Menzies of Culdares, "Old Culdares" who had been pardoned for his participation in the 1715 Jacobite rising, brought the first larches from the Austrian Tyrol in 1737 and presented them to the Duke of Atholl.

Archibald Menzies was born in 1754 at Styx, an old branch house of the Menzies of Culdares near Perthshire in Scotland.
Menzies had attained some fame as a botanist, and was appointed by the British Government in 1790 as naturalist to accompany Captain Vancouver in the Discovery on a voyage around the world.
Menzies was charged with keeping a regular journal of all occurrences, together with a complete collec-tion of specimens of animals, vegetables and minerals, as well as clothes, arms, implements and manufactures of the native peoples.

Castle Menzies (pronounced 'Mingies') is a very fine example of a type of castle known only in the east of Scotland - the Z-plan Tower House.
It was the seat of the chiefs of Clan Menzies from the 16th Century until the death of the last of the main line of the family in 1918.
Although no longer occupied by the family, the castle is still the centre of clan life and is the scene of the annual Menzies Clan Gathering.

Blair Castle lies at the southern end of the Drumochter Pass and, together with Ruthven Castle at the north end, was built by the Comyn family to secure their power right across the Scottish Highlands.
Blair Castle was first built around Comyn's Tower in 1269, and by the time of Mary Queen of Scots' visit in 1564, the castle had been extended southwards to include the Great Hall.
The castle itself stands in impressive scenery and was restyled as a Georgian mansion in the middle of the eighteenth century.

We are doubly fortunate to have two scans of the same image, thanks to the kindness of two John Menzies, each an ocean apart from the other.
The first picture of the Castle Menzies was provided by John Menzies of Orlando, Florida from a lithograph that is part of The Book of Menzies, handed down through his family.
John (of Aberdeenshire) and his wife have visited the castle and report that the Society is doing a fine job of restoring it.
