Castle Peak is the throat of an ancient volcano and its three turrets are easily visible form nearby Interstate 80 at Donner Summit.
Just as Donner Peak overlooks the original Donner Pass (old HWY 40) and is popular with skiers, hikers and climbers, Castle Peak overlooks the newer pass (I-80) and is also very popular with skiers and hikers.
The road is paved for an eighth of a mile or so up to the gate where it turns into a dirt road and heads north.

The prospect of climbing Castle was a little intimidating to me, for the Elk Range seemed to be a distant and rugged place that I was largely unfamiliar with.
The surrounding peaks stood out boldly against the backdrop of the deep blue sky as I hiked past the ruins of the Montezuma Mine and reached the end of the four wheel drive road at 12,800 feet.
A large snowfield lay in the basin, with a steep slope of snow extending up the west side of the basin nearly to the saddle between Castle and its subpeak to the north, Conundrum Peak.

Another part of the attraction was the opportunity to ascend the peak’s rocky northeast ridge, then descend the easier northwest ridge to the Castle-Conundrum saddle, and then glissade the snowfields back into upper Montezuma Basin.
I was nearly to the end of the road before I was finally treated to a view of the summit, lightly dusted with fresh snow, rising majestically above the peak’s prominent ridges and snowfields.
But once the gear was packed and I was steering the truck back down the road toward Aspen, the frustration with camping began to dissolve, leaving behind the feeling of accomplishment that comes with a challenge met, and a feeling of gratitude that I had been permitted to share this beautiful, interesting mountain.

The walk is on a well-marked trail skirting the wooded peaks of the island.
We followed the quiet paved road around and up to Wong Ma Ying and then followed a well-established path, much of it of ancient origin down to Ngong Wo village where we saw a wild boar crossing the path in front of us.
From there we'll climb Kowloon Peak on some rougher trails and hopefully find a route all the way down to Hammer Hill and the Choi Hung MTR station.
