Castle Rock, Maine is part of Stephen King’s fictional Maine topography, and as such serves as the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.
Built similarly to the prototypical King town Jerusalem's Lot (featured in the novel 'Salem's Lot), Castle Rock is a typical small New England town with several dark secrets.
This came to be known as Castle Rock Entertainment.

Sedimentary rocks are: siltstone; fine- to medium-grained, buff-colored sandstone; pebble to cobble conglomerate with abundant cobble-size and larger white pumice clasts grading upward to light-yellow-tan tuffaceous sandstone and siltstone, volcanic conglomerate, and ash-flow tuff.

For decades the City of Rocks near Oakley has been a choice destination for rock climbers who come for the sculpted slabs of granite that reach several hundred feet into the sky above pristine creek valleys filled with groves of rare mountain mahogany and pinon pine trees.
Once a crossroads for traders on the California Trail, the City of Rocks area was discovered by the international climbing community in the 1980s, ultimately leading to its designation as a National Reserve in 1991.
According to Wallace Keck, superintendent of Castle Rocks State Park, both climbing areas were established in partnership with traditional uses of grazing and hunting.

Castle Rocks includes not only the impressive 1,000 foot high Castle Rock Spire but also the upper towers which have faces nearly as tall.
But for the rock climber, perhaps the most inspiring feature of the area is the awesome and beautiful face of the "FIN" which stretches up to about a 1,000 feet to its narrow summit ridge.
This incredible blade of rock, clearly visible from Generals Highway is the highest spire in California outside of Yosemite.

At one time you were able to walk atop the castle but due to the mass erosion you must now stay on the platform.
The best way to see all of the Pictured Rocks is to take a cruise on the Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises, which began in the 1920's.

An alternative entry is from the flat dark rock on the right hand side of the cluster of rocks, further to the east than the gulley.
The rocks are a photographers dream: the rocks are covered with multi-coloured invertibrates, including nudibranches, starfish, urchins, anemones, big gorgonians and sea-fans, huge sponges, crayfish and basket stars.
Castle Rock is a favourite training dive and also a great spot for night dives, although you must exercise caution on the slippery rocks, especially at night.

This is a great moderate trail to hike, and with the bonus of Castle Rocks at the end, it makes the hike a great one.
Castle Rock is similar, but on a smaller scale as a previous hike I took called Elephant Rocks.
Parking is about 100 yards from the rocks, but we always take the trail north first so that we end at the rock formation as a treat.
