Castle Rock (Stephen King) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Castle Rock, Maine is part of Stephen King’s fictional Maine topography, and as such serves as the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.
Population of Castle Rock was 1280 by 1959 and around 1500 before destruction in Needful Things.
Castle Rock is influenced by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine to Donald and Ruth Pillsbury King.
King barely missed the driver's side support post in the van and also barely missed a spread of rocks on the ground near where he landed, either of which would likely have killed him or put him in a permanent coma.
King staged a mock funeral for Bachman after the pseudonym was made public, which in turn inspired the book The Dark Half, in which a novelist stages the burial of his horror author pseudonym after having a "serious" novel published, only to find that his alter ego does not want to leave quite so easily.

King incorporated his accident into the final novel, in which the hero Roland Deschain and his friends try to stop King from being fatally injured by the van.
King believes that good stories cannot be called consciously and should not be plotted out beforehand but are better served by focusing on a single "seed" of a story and letting the story build itself from there.
King is also known for his folksy, informal narration, often referring to his fans as "Constant Readers" or "friends and neighbors." He uses this Style to contrast with the often gory or scary content of many of his stories.

Castle Rock resurrects Stephen King's movie reputation: 10/2/01
Now Castle Rock is releasing its seventh King adaptation, "Hearts in Atlantis," about the friendship between a boy (Anton Yelchin) and a mysterious boarder (Anthony Hopkins), set in the summer of 1960.
The relationship between Castle Rock and King began in 1985 when director Rob Reiner turned his attention to the author's novella "The Body," about four boys on a quest to find the remains of a missing boy.
"Castle Rock has what I call a sort of serial franchise that has shown the cinema-going public that the power of King's writing is really in his characters," said "Hearts in Atlantis" director Scott Hicks.

Many of Stephen King's readers (including some of the author's diehard fans) agree that the author's novels lost some of their pizzazz around 1987 or so.
Very few of King's books have actually succeeded in avoiding those qualities, and while this one isn't the prime violator, it still might not be such a great idea to let your thirteen year old child grab this book off the shelf before you've screened it.
As usual, what King has managed to do in this book is take a story older than the combined age of all his many readers and turn it into something new and entertaining, though, and for that he should be praised.

The Cold Spot -- "Needful Things" by Stephen King
The citizens of Castle Rock thought they had been through tragedy before--dead bodies, rabid dogs, the occasional murderous doppelganger.
Stephen King's final Castle Rock tale, about the town tearing itself apart (albeit with a little help from the outside), is an impressive show of King's ability to juggle multiple plotlines and characters and keep them separate and interesting.
While I usually disagree with critics who bemoan King's tendency to bouts of "diarrhea of the word processor," Needful Things is, I think, too long.

Powell's Books - Needful Things: The Last Castle Rock Story by Stephen King
"Needful Things" is a quintessential Stephen King horror story, incorporating a number of themes observed in other King novels, including the idea of a "demonic plaguebearer" descending on a hapless group of people, and the use of white magic and 'taking a stand' against evil.
What distinguishes the novel, other than its distinctive themes, are the realistic characters, and the complex systems of interaction between them in the town of Castle Rock.
At times, this is a bit of a disadvantage to the reader, since it appears to take the novel a considerable amount of time to get the plot moving.
