Laputa may be on my short list of great boys' adventures, and I think one of the best things Miyazaki ever did (he cribbed the castle from his earlier Cagliostro and from Grimault's King and Bird, and you can see the flock of pigeons in a film he helped animate, Puss n Boots).
Love Laputa; in a way, it's Miyazaki's repudiation of his own love of flying--what's important is not that crystal at the heart of the castle (flight), but the tree with roots holding the whole thing together (groundedness).

I bought Castle in the Sky for my little baby girl (OK, so she’s fifteen months old right now — but who says I can’t plan ahead here?) as an antidote to the usual Disney fare.
Set in a peculiar alternate reality which mixes technological elements from Jules Verne and early Superman comics (a robot's design), it details the quest of a young boy and girl for a mythic giant city that floats in the sky.
Castle in the Sky is as an old-fashioned yarn as those huge dirigibles in it.

A long time ago, in an unnamed mining town on Earth, a boy named Pazu is working in the mines when a mysterious girl named Sheeta floats down from the sky wearing a mysterious crystal around her neck after she falls from an airship in the sky.
The original music of Castle In The Sky was very understated but when Disney redid the film (they really remastered it) they added an entire new music score with a full orchestra throughout the entire film and I loved it.

They manage to escape and Laputa, what is left of it, rises in the sky out of reach of anyone else.
