The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666 and 1679, replacing an earlier mud and timber fort built in 1652 by Commander Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch merchant who landed in Table Bay in 1652, together with 72 men and 8 women.
The castle was built for the protection of the early settlers against marauding Hottentots and as the residence of the Governor.

Sister of the Riebeeck Castle she was delivered on 5th March 1946 to carry fruit from South Africa on the northbound voyage and general cargo on the southbound voyage.

The majority of the stone boulders used to build the castle came from Holland (sometimes referred to as "Fort de Goede Hoop" or “Castle of Good Hope”).

The good part about it is that we don't have to, because Jung did it for us.
Sounds like a good deal to me. The only criticism I have so far is that I can only upload photos 5MB or smaller, and a good many of mine are ~8MB.

From 1678, it was the centre for civilian, administrative and military life in the Cape area and today remains the seat of the military (you see uniformed soldiers still walking through the courtyard) and houses an excellent museum and art collection representing the history of life in the Cape.
The castle structure is pentagonal, entered past ceremonial lions (see photo below) and under a bell tower (the bell is original, cast in Amsterdam in 1697 and weighs 670lbs), it bears the coat of arms of the United Netherlands, a crowned lion rampant holding the seven arrows of unity in its paw.
Also in the Castle are dungeons and torture chamber, remains of a bakery, smithy, ammunition store and garrison cells, plus the Dolphin Fountain.
