Joka tapauksessa Turku on Suomen vanhin kaupunki, sillä Porvoon perustamisvuosi on 1346.
Ruotsin hävittyä sodan Venäjän kanssa ja luovutettua Suomen alueen Haminan rauhassa vuonna 1809 Turku oli Suomen suuriruhtinaskunnan pääkaupunki (keskushallinnon sijoituspaikka), sillä siellä sijaitsivat jo ennestään tärkeimmät hallinnolliset elimet ja mm.
Turku on jo vanhastaan ollut sekä sijaintinsa että pääkaupunkiasemansa vuoksi portti länteen ja laivayhteydet Ruotsiin ovat olleet kiinteät.
