Castleconnell is so intimately connected with this sport that it has given its name to a favorite pattern of fly-rod, in which a movable splice takes the place of the usual metal joint.
The beautiful rapids of Doonas (avoided by a canal) are in the neighborhood, and the surrounding scenery is generally attractive.
There are remains of a castle from which the town took its name, which was the seat of the kings of Thomond, and was blown up by General Ginkel at the time of the siege of Limerick (1690).

A huge majority of the residents in Castleconnell are blocking a bid by a British housing agency to build voluntary housing in the village.
Castleconnell residents met area councillors, council officials and a representative of the St Pancras agency this week and presented them with 600 signatures demanding a halt to all housing schemes in the village.
Calling for a local development plan for Castleconnell, resident association chairman Paul McCarthy said that locals are angry and frustrated that they as a community have no input into how their village will be developed.

"Having met a representative of St Pancras Housing Association, the residents of Castleconnell and all the relevant officials of the final response by the planning department will have to be negative or it will be a seriously bad decision," she said.

THE planned closure of Castleconnell footbridge is just not acceptable before workers are ready to begin working on the major repairs, says newly elected Cllr Noreen Ryan.
The Castleconnell resident has led the storm of local protest after Council officials in Limerick and Clare said the bridge must close for major repairs this week.
There has to be ways found of supporting the bridge at its weakest points until the council's are ready for a permanent job.

John Brown Frewen emigrated from Castleconnell, Ireland in 1860 with a cousin named Stephan Frewen through the port of Queenstown, eventually settling in Philadelphia, PA.
On a recent visit (Dec., 1999) to Castleconnell, the researcher who sent me this info came across a letter dated 3 APR 1885,composed by Margaret Brown Frewen.
The next day, in response to an inquest to the Limerick Regional Archives, he received the report of the marriage dated 14 February 1838 in St. John's parish in Limerick uniting Margaret BROWN with Thomas FREWEN, Rev. William Quinn officiating.
