Located in the Columbia Valley at the confluence of the tumbling Columbia and Kootenay Rivers, Castlegar, called the 'Heart of the Kootenays' was a housing community for Cominco employees in Trail to the south, but quickly grew into a town in its own right, experiencing positive growth in difficult times.
Location: Castlegar is located in the Kootenays at the junction of Highways 3, 3A and Highway 22, 26 miles (41 km) southwest of Nelson and 26 miles (41 km) west of Salmo.
Eight kilometres upstream from Castlegar is the Hugh Keenleyside Dam, the second of the three Columbia River Treaty dams to be built to regulate and harness the flow of the Columbia River, to generate power and end the annual threat of flood damage in BC, Washington and Oregon.

Castlegar (49° 19′ 34″ N, 117° 39′ 53″ W) is a small city in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada.
The population of approximately 7,500 people includes a large number of Doukhobors, who were largely responsible for much of Castlegar's early development and growth.
Castlegar is serviced by the Castlegar Airport, located in an area owned by the city and legally within city limits, and surrounded by the community of Ootischenia.

This walk is one of the most memorable experiences of Castlegar, especially if one is caught admiring the acrobatics of the swallows when the daily train booms onto the Bridge, shivering the old timbers and shaking the catwalk, 6,000 horsepower throbbing by not two feet away on the other side of the fence.
Castlegar’s economy received a boost when Doukhobors began building settlements in the area in 1907, and especially when the Sect commenced to operate a ferry between Brilliant and “Castlegar Junction” in 1908.
Castlegar is pretty well supplied with motels, all of which, but for the exception of the City Centre on Second Street downtown, are out in the far south end of town on No.3 west.

The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club has been providing well maintained cross country ski trails in the Rossland-Paulson area for the last thirty years.
The trails are located about 40 km west of Castlegar on Highway 3, just west of the junction of Highways 3 and 3B at Nancy Greene Lake.
The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club provides approximately 45 km of packed and tracked ski trails ranging from beginner to advanced levels with most being beginner and intermediate.
