  XXXX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XXXX's name, first introduced in 1924, is a throwback to the long standing tradition of using Xs to indicate the strength of an ale.
XXXX's mascot is Mr Fourex - a jovial cartoon man in a suit with a boater hat, who features on the City side of the Fourex Brewery at Milton and is to be re-introduced into advertising in the near future for the first time since 1967.
XXXX's labels generally feature a depiction of the Milton Brewery alongside the Ipswich railway line, presently with a CityTrain EMU in the foreground with the existing extensive railway fencing omitted.

The brew was met with strong approval by the local newspaper, the Brisbane Courier, as it was called then, which described the beer as “a delicious ale, of the brightest amber, pleasant to taste, with a peculiarity of flavour not easily described, and an aroma of an appetising nature by itself”.
Although a “Castlemaine (XXXX) Sparkling Prize Ale” had been produced at Milton from the early 1880’s (it won a “Special Prize ” at the First International Exhibition in Sydney in 1883), it was not until the financial crash of the early 1890’s that the first trade mark showing four X’s was applied for.
Castlemaine Perkins continued to grow, as did the sales of XXXX Bitter Ale, until 1970 when the range was expanded with the introduction of XXXX Draught.

Queenslanders are rightly shocked when they travel down south, or indeed, virtually anywhere outside their great state, and find themselves being given strange looks when they ask for their treasured "pot a fourex thanks mate".
It is indeed strange times when XXXX is available on tap in Portsmouth, England, but you hard pressed finding a stubbie in Australia's biggest city Sydney, the so-called Olympic city.
The golden drop was masterfully brewed by Castlemaine's newly appointed german brewer in 1924, essentially replacing their Sparkling Ale, using a yeast transported from Germany (which was, ironically, transported back to Germany after the original culture was destroyed during World War II).

Castlemaine Perkins’ managing director Ken Freer said the change was important to ensure the brand maintained a modern image and reflected its status as the number one selling beer in Queensland.
The new packaging also places more emphasis on the XXXX Gold shield label, which is now larger in size, includes the brewery watermark on cans and cartons, as well as a better description of the beer that will, for the first time, reveal its “secret” ingredient.
Castlemaine Perkins does not plan to support the new branding initiative with an advertising campaign at this stage.

This is a pretty darn good beer however, very crisp and clean leading to a refreshing taste not unlike other Brisbane brews such as XXXX.
It doesn't mean I'm, converting from XXXX heavy (maybe when hell freezes over) but this stuff is quite drinkable although inferior to Carbine.
I'd compare this beer to very warm Fourex (for you Americans I mean XXXX not a brand of condom.) It has that undrinkable taste about it and is impossible to drink in quantity.
