Castlerea Poor Law Union was formally declared on the 14th September 1839 and covered an area of 374 square miles.
At the Castlerea workhouse a shocking state of things existed, the poor inmates lying upon straw and their dormitories being in such a state of dirt that we were unable to venture into them.
The workhouse remained in operation until 1920 when, under a scheme to reduce the number of workhouses in the area, the Strokestown and Roscommon unions were re-amalgamated, and the Castlerea and Strokestown workhouses closed, to the consternation of local traders who were heavily dependent on Union Contracts.

Roscommon is still very much a county of wide open spaces; much longer than it is wide, it is bordered for much of its eastern flank by the river Shannon, and although there are plenty of little villages, large towns are few and far between.
It, Boyle, and Castlerea are all nice places to spend a day or two, just don't expect the nightlife to be the most hip and happening this side of NYC, that's all.
The main thing this part of the world has going for it is a chance to relax in unhurried surroundings; the pubs are friendly, the roads are relatively quiet, and there are some fine places to stay and eat too.
