  Castlerigg Stone Circle, Cumbria
Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the finest in Cumbria, it is spectacularly situated within a panorama of rugged hills of ever changing character, depending on the mercurial Lakeland weather.
Castlerigg does not conform to a true circle, the Northeast face is flattened, perhaps due to some little understood aspect of megalithic surveying.
It has been noted that many of the stones of Castlerigg seem to reflect features in the surrounding hills, as though the landscape site is an interplay between the sacred space and the landscape beyond.

Stones of England - Castlerigg stone circle
Castlerigg is one of the most beautiful stone circles in Britain, set in a splendid position, in an open field crowned by the Lake District's mountains, 213m (700ft) above sea level.
Probably, Castlerigg had a variety of functions: easily approached from all directions, it was probably used for trading, religious ceremonies, and tribal gathering.
Castlerigg, known to local people as Druid's Circle, is also called Keswick Carles, apparently because of an old legend telling that the stones are petrified men, but in fact for a misunderstanding of William Stukeley's word Carles for Castle.

The Langdale industry produced roughly hewn axes and simple blocks as well as the highly polished final product and all were traded on throughout Britain and Ireland.
The manufacturers of the axes also built some of the first Neolithic stone circles such as that at Castlerigg.
Some axes appear worn whilst others appear unused implying that they may have been more of a status symbol than a practical tool.

We weren't sure if Castlerigg Farm would be to our liking as most farm sites we have stayed on have had a couple of basic showers and a cold tap.
Castlerigg Farm has much more, from the power showers, hand dryers, laundry room and shop we found the site to be well cared for and very clean.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Castlerigg Farm for the Easter break for 2 nights.  It was great, the facilities were superb, the showers were hot and 50p was enough with 3 1/2 mins to have a wash although was a bit tricky when having to wash hair, had to be quick!
