Castletown (Balley Chashtal in Manx) is a town in the south of the Isle of Man.
Castletown's population is 3,100 (according to the 2001 census).
To the north is Ballasalla, the north-west the village of Ballabeg and to the west Port St. Mary and Port Erin.

Portland Port Ltd. took over from the Ministry of Defence at the beginning of the year as the new harbour authority for Portland Harbour.
As Portland Harbour is a very good sheltered diving location, ideal for training purposes, it is important that all BSAC branches and divers are made aware of these changes.
Portland Port Ltd. would like to make it clear that they are not enforcing charges to deter divers and other water sports enthusiasts from using the harbour, their aim is to create and maintain a safe environment for all water sport enthusiasts.

The red square area encloses the heart of Castletown; an old fishing community which became in early Victorian times, the central collection point for much of the stone taken off Portland.
Castletown was once a favourite spot for Portland fishermen to sail from into Portland harbour.
The children are crab-hunting on the little-known small beach at the foot of Portland Castle which is just off the picture at right.

Portland is an island connected to the rest of Dorset by a causeway at Weymouth.
Portland is the home of the famous Portland stone, used in the construction of some of Britain's most magnificent buildings such as St Paul's Cathedral and The National Gallery.
In the Portland Sand Formation and top-most Kimmeridge the concentration of boron (greater than 250 ppm.) is too high for the inferred marine salinities and probably reflects a mineralogical boron input in the form of glauconite.

It is not yet known whether Portland Port aims to open the South Entrance by destroying or removing the wreck altogether, thus opening it to larger marine vessels.
As no previous consultations or communication with the interested parties were made by Portland Port, it is not known whether there are plans to extend the ban(s) to other sites.
It should be appreciated that the Portland Harbour Authority is responsible for the safety of all harbour users; the authority is required under the Port Marine Safety Code to carry out risk assessments on a regular basis.

We will be diving from "Top Gun" out of Castletown in Portland, a spacious vessel with loads of room for kitting up; it includes not only a hydraulic lift for making entry and exit completely stress-free, but supplies of Hot Chocolate at the end of each dive.
Perhaps one of the most famous offshore wrecks in the Portland area, the M2 was built in 1918 as a K-boat and in 1927 she was converted to carry a light sea plane in a hanger in front of the conning tower.
It is generally accepted that she sank in January 1932 after diving with the hanger doors open (as they are today), tragically with the loss of all hands - she is an official grave.

At 9am Portland Coastguard were contacted by the glass bottomed boat Discoverer on VHF Channel 16 reporting that they had just picked up three persons from the water in Portland Harbour.
The three people from Bristol, had left Castletown in Portland this morning in a small 18’ boat with fishing equipment on board.
The three people, all in their 60’s, were reported to have been in the water for about 30 minutes when fortunately the Discoverer spotted them.

I did see people camping outside behind the house as well.
The house will have a good view, but there really isn't a lot to do in Portland besides hike or maybe the castle *snores*.
Nearby is Weymouth, Nothe Forte looked cool, the park was really nice for watching the sunset.
