Castletown's population is 3,100 (according to the 2001 census).

Ian Hargrave, the Council's Area Manager for Caithness, told residents: "I should emphasise that the Council is carrying this work out in the interest of public safety and that the investigation works are precautionary.
The Highland Council has written to residents in 150 properties in Castletown, Caithness, to advise them of work which will begin next month to identify if gases are being generated in the nearby disused landfill site and if the gases are moving towards the town.
The landfill was operated by the former Caithness County and District Councils from the 1970s until closure in the late 1980s.

Castletown was created to provide accommodation for the workers in the flagstone quarries Traill established in the area to commercially exploit a material long used for local buildings and field boundaries.
To the east of the harbour is the impressive ruin of the very large Castletown Mill, built by Traill in 1818 to process corn from the surrounding area.

One is made of large flat flagstones and the other is a built wall of flagstone fragments, similar to the building seen in the picture on the right.
Flagstones were exported from Caithness from about 1825 and you will find many towns - even in the South of England paved with them.
The Pier has had it's fair share of winter storm damage, in the winter of 1967/70, the lower slipway was washed away.

The axe is 6000 years old and was found by George MacDougall during field-walking organised by the Caithness Archaeological Trust.
The field-walking is part of a two-week programme involving experts and local volunteers, which has also uncovered 8000 year old flint tools at Thrumster.
