It may justly be said that Castletown is the largest and most splendid country house in Ireland, but it is also arguably the most important for it introduced sophisticated Palladianism from the continent and brought about a revolution in Irish architecture.
Castletown's interior was largely created during the time of Tom Conolly, the Speaker's great nephew, who inherited the property in 1758 when he was twenty four.
The Francini brothers first came to Ireland in l739 and are credited with the introduction of human figures into plaster decoration; characteristically, their plasterwork on the staircase incorporates a number of family portraits as well as large canvases, notably 'The Boar Hunt' by Snyders.

Castletown House, Celbridge, was built in 1722 for ‘Speaker’ William Conolly, the speaker of the Irish House of Commons from 1715.
Castletown was then inherited by her nephew William.

Emily Ursula Clare Saint Leger, the daughter of the Fourth Viscount Doneraile, was the wife of Bernard Edward Barnaby Ftzpatiick Baron Castletown of Upper Ossory.
The principal residence of the Castle-towns in Ireland was at Grantstown (Granston) in Queen's County, but they lived also at the house of her family, Doneraile Court, situated north of Mallow in Cork County.
Since none of Lady Castletown's letters survive, the picture created by this correspondence is somewhat one-sided; it leaves the lady as a vague and mysterious figure while revealing in a blaze of light all the intimacies of Wendell's emotional nature.

Castletown House is an early-nineteenth-century farmhouse set in scenic surroundings on a 200-acre beef and sheep farm, on which the ruins of a Norman castle remain (approached through open fields of grazing sheep).
This must be one of the best-value accommodations in Ireland: the bedromms are of a good size and there are several interesting pieces of antique furniture.

The building was begun between 1721 and 1722 for William Conolly (1622-1729), the son of a Donegal innkeeper who, through astute dealings in forfeited estates after the Williamite wars, had become the richest man in Ireland.
The design of the house was entrusted to the Florentine Alessandro Galilei (1691-1737), best known for his work on the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
She eventually died in 1821, seated in a tent erected on the lawn in front of Castletown, for it was her wish that she should go looking at the house she had loved so much.
