Castletown House is an early-nineteenth-century farmhouse set in scenic surroundings on a 200-acre beef and sheep farm, on which the ruins of a Norman castle remain (approached through open fields of grazing sheep).
The house was completely renovated in 1979, at which time the 30-inch-thick outer walls were raised by 18 inches.
Castletown House was the recipient of a regional Agri-Tourism award.

The design of the building led to the construction of Leinster House and from thence to the White House in Washington, D.C. The estate was begun in 1722 by William Conolly (1662-1729), Speaker of the Irish House of Commons.
Castletown House reflects the balance of that philosophy with a great central block of grey stone flanked by golden Ardbraccan stone curved colonnades which join the kitchen and stables to the main house.
Castletown was formerly the headquarters of the Irish Georgian Society, who rescued the building, restored it, and furnished it with Irish furniture and paintings of the period.

It may justly be said that Castletown is the largest and most splendid country house in Ireland, but it is also arguably the most important for it introduced sophisticated Palladianism from the continent and brought about a revolution in Irish architecture.
The house is an obvious manifestation of his wealth, but it also reflects the enormous political power that Conolly achieved following his election as Speaker of the Irish House of Commons in 1715 and his appointment as Lord Justice in 1716.
Castletown's interior was largely created during the time of Tom Conolly, the Speaker's great nephew, who inherited the property in 1758 when he was twenty four.
