In 1901 the Admiralty intimated that Castletownbere was to become a dockyard port and requested that maintenance of the local beacons and buoys be transferred to them.
Following the stranding of a trawler on a rock near Castletownbere in December, 1945 the Berehaven Development Association wrote to the Commissioners requesting that the harbour lights be restored.
The light source is a 1500w, 100v electric lamp in a Stone Chance 500mm diameter dioptric drum lens with L24 lamps in an LC15 lampchanger, powered from the mains with a standby diesel generator in case of mains failure.

The Castletownbere volunteers were undergoing their final week’s training with their new station lifeboat prior to bringing her to Castletownbere this weekend (expected time of arrival Mon 2 August at 4pm).
Brian was appointed coxswain of Castletownbere Lifeboat in 2000.

The Siege of Dunboy took place towards the end of the Nine Years War (Ireland), from the 5-18 June in 1602, following the siege of Kinsale.
Dunboy Castle was situated near the town of Castletownbere, on the Beara Peninsula, Co. Cork, in south-western Ireland.
It was a stone tower house, built to control and defend the harbour of Bearhaven, which was a stronghold of Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare, a Gaelic clan leader and the 'Chief of Dunboy'.

A new joint venture between two of Europe’s leading dredging and remediation specialists has been awarded the €8.3million contract to dredge and remediate the Castletownbere Harbour to enable the famous port to maintains its position as Irelands leading processing centre for white fish.
Environmental Dredging Ireland, a joint venture between Land & Water Remediation and Belgium’s DEC, is scheduled to begin work on the two phase contract in July 2005.
