Castlevania (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Castlevania is the North American and European title of Demon Castle Dracula (悪魔城ドラキュラ Akumajō Dracula), a Japanese console video game developed and published by Konami for the Famicom Disk System in 1986.
Castlevania is a typical platform game of the 8-bit era: the game is comprised of six levels, which are played through in a strictly linear progression.
Each of Castlevania's six levels conclude with a boss fight: these bosses are generally taken from horror literature or legend, and include Frankenstein's Monster, Medusa, and the Grim Reaper.

The environments in Castlevania are quite intricate for the NES era and the developers managed to create some truly creepy and foreboding levels for players to battle through.
With its compendium of monstrous enemies (several of which were obviously inspired by the classic Universal movie monsters), Castlevania was like a breath of fresh air for gamers like myself who were tired of the typical cartoony video game characters that ruled the day.
The bottom-line is this, kids: Castlevania remains as one of the greatest classics of the 8-bit era and no self-respecting gamer -- either new or old -- should avoid playing it.

 Archive 64: Castlevania - Nintendo 64 (N64) Review
Castlevania for N64 is a mixture of action and adventure.
Some of the status restoration items in Castlevania are purifying crystals (cures vampirism), poison cure ampoules (rids your body of poison), healing kits (completely restores HP and status), and sun and moon cards (to move time to sunrise or sunset).
Graphically, Castlevania falls short because many of the system's most aesthetically impressive games (Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Turok 2, and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) were released only two months earlier.

Review - Classic NES Series: Castlevania // Game Boy Advance /// Eurogamer
Castlevania certainly doesn't pull its punches with death practically omnipresent every half a screen, but this ought not to come as a huge surprise to most of us of a "certain age".
Castlevania has at least tempered the difficulty level with a few now-standard innovations, like an energy bar and a continue system.
We still suggest that arch Castlevania fiends check it out if they feel compelled to complete their collections, as once you get into the groove there is a degree of enjoyment to be had, but at least try it before you buy if you can.

 Castlevania_Lament
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is a prequel set before the events in all of the previous titles and traces the origins of the Belmont clan's never-ending battles against vampires.
It's definitely one of the moodier Castlevania adventures to date, and the Castlevania spirit is evident throughout.
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is an excellent title that offers tight-controls, challenging opponents and beautiful aesthetics.

 IGN: Castlevania Chronicles Review
Castlevania Chronicles is a revised and updated version of a straightforward Castlevania platformer from the X68000 home-computer platform in Japan.
To gauge this against the Castlevania series as a whole, it's a strong game, but one inevitably eclipsed by the later installments in the series.
Simon's Quest some have mixed feelings about, but Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV, and the appallingly fine Rondo of Blood on the PC-Engine are finer examples of the Castlevania concept, but they had the advantage of experience and greater technical resources behind them.

Although 3D platform games are relatively popular, one must question this move due to the popular success of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the Playstation.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night had literally hundreds of weapons, armor, spells, and more that added amazing depth to the game.

However, since Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance for the Game Boy Advance, the Japanese games have officially adopted the western name for the series, although it should be noted the first Japanese title to recognize the "Castlevania" name was Castlevania Chronicles (yet it still retained the subtitle of "Akumajō Dracula X68000").
As new Castlevania games began to be released, the outfit of those heroes changed to more elegant, fancy vests, reflecting an evolution in the games, also in matters of character design.
A milestone was reached by the release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the PlayStation.

IGN: Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance Review
The success of that title, both inside and outside of North America, prompted the company to continue the Castlevania line on the handheld, and the result is Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance.
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance takes place about fifty years after the original Castlevania, with players assuming the role of Simon Belmont's grandson, Juste.
Outstanding continuation of the Castlevania gameplay...the boss battles have been tamed down a lot from last year's game, but otherwise the game's fun as all heck.

News - Castlevania set for adventure and RPG focused return // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
Hot on the heels of the announcement of a new Castlevania title for the Nintendo DS, scans from US magazine Play have revealed that Konami's Tokyo development studio is hard at work on a new vampire slaying epic for the PlayStation 2.
Reported to be the series' last outing on PS2, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness is a 3D title which promises a stronger focus on the adventure and RPG elements which were left by the wayside somewhat in previous PS2 incarnation Lament of Innocence.
As for the 2D Castlevania titles, Igarashi assured Play that he's not done with 2D games yet by any means - but he wants to make a better 3D Castlevania first.

Koji Igarashi, better known as IGA, is responsible for one of the finest games released for consoles -- 1997's PlayStation Castlevania: Symphony of the Night -- and he's well aware of it; all the same, it just means that his newer works are subjected to extra scrutiny.
This game is, for all intents and purposes, the follow-up to Symphony of the Night, but it properly and irrevocably brings Castlevania into the third dimension instead of continuing the intricate, 2D style of the series' most recent outings.

Review: Castlevania (PS2) || Deadalfs - www.deadalfs.co.uk - gaming news, reviews, articles, forums and more
Castlevania (known in other territories as Castlevania 'Lament of Innocence') is another entry into the rapidly growing section of the PS2 library, featuring frantic 3rd person action combined with RPG elements, with Devil May Cry, Rygar The Legendary Adventure, and Onimusha 2 being the current benchmarks.
Castlevania inherits these traits, but is as far from the Survival Horror genre as Pac Man is from Quake.
Devil May Cry used Castlevania as a template, approaching it with the ethos: 'what would Castlevania look like in 3D?' Konami have made a similar nod to DMC, and reworked Castlevania's gameplay staples into the 3D world, with a control system and interface which is very similar.
