Castlewellan (in Irish: Caisleán Uidhilín, ie Uidhilín’s Castle) is a large village in County Down, Northern Ireland, situated beside Castlewellan Lake and Slievenaslat mountain, 16 miles (25 km) south west of Downpatrick.
Castlewellan Forest Park and Castlewellan Lake are situated to the northwest of the village.
Castlewellan Castle, a Scottish baronial castle of 1856, overlooks the lake and the park.

In the 16th century Castlewellan was a stronghold and one of the chief seats of the Magennis family.
The lands at Castlewellan passed into the possession of the Annesley family in 1742 when they were purchased from Arthur Magennis though the family had previously resided there for some years on lease.
Delany, wife of the Dean of Down, a tenant of the Annesleys' at Dundrum, wrote to her sister informing her that the Annesleys had 'walled in and planted with oak, etc., three hundred and fifty acres of ground for a park.

Castlewellan Forest Park, with its Castle, Lake, Forest and Campsite is one of the greatest places on earth, and the decision to move it is one of the worst decisions in the history of bad decisions.
All hope is not yet lost however, as an alternative Castlewellan is being planned, to be held at Castlewellan in 2008.

The County Chairman then was Gerry O'Donoughue and the Registrar James Fitzpatrick, both from Castlewellan and these two men also acted as official referees for a number of years until the emigration situation was overcome.
