Because the bones of the tail, or caudal vertebrae, of the fossil beaver from Hagerman are similar in shape to the tail bones of the living beavers, it is safe to speculate that its tail looked similar to today's beaver.
The modern genus Castor which we know is aquatic, does not show up in the fossil record until much later in the Pliocene.

 Castor
Castor oils unsaturated bond, high molecular weight (298), low melting point (5ºC) and very low solidification point (-12ºC to -18ºC) make it industrially useful, most of all for the highest and most stable viscosity of any vegetable oil (Bonjean, 1991).
The regions in which castor may be grown as a commercial crop are restricted by lack of frost tolerant types and the need for high temperatures (optimum 20 - 25ºC, over 4.5 - 6 months) and low atmospheric humidity to achieve good yields.
The primary use of Castor oil is as a basic ingredient in the production of nylon 11, sebacic acid, plasticisers and jet engine lubricants, nylon 6-10, heavy duty automotive greases, coatings and inks, surfactants, polyurethanes, soaps, polishes, flypapers, paints, varnishes, lubricants, and many other chemical derivatives and medicinal, pharmaceutical and cosmetic derivatives.

Fixation by this means is deemed to be fixation by monotypy, regardless of any cited synonyms, subspecies, or unavailable names, and regardless of whether the author considered the nominal genus-group taxon to contain other species which he or she did not cite by name, and regardless of nominal species-group taxa doubtfully included or identified.
If a new genus is divided into subgenera at the time its name is established, and if the nominotypical subgenus contains only a single species, that nominal species is deemed to be the type by monotypy of the new nominal genus.

If a subgenus is designated as type genus of a family group taxon, it is deemed to have been first raised to genus rank; if a subspecies is designated as type species of a genus group taxon, it is deemed to have been first raise to species rank.
11, the type species of the genus or subgenus is that species first directly associated with it under an available species group name; it is not automatically the type species of the taxon denoted by the senior synonym.
If, in the synonymy of only one of the originally included species in a genus group taxon established before 1931, there is cited a pre-1758 name of one word identical with the new genus group name that species is the type species by indication (type by Linnaean tautonomy).

I am not especially familiar with the Araliaceae, but this type of change, chopping up a formerly large genus, occurs when newer taxonomic methods, such as chromosome studies, breeding trials, microscopic examination, etc., reveal that the various plants are not as closely related as was previously thought.
The Araliaceae in particular, may be hard to study because the flowers are small and as far as I know, members of this family rarely blossom in captivity.
