The character of the new Doctor, whilst not fully established until the story reaches Castrovalva itself, is nevertheless developed over the first two episodes; initially hugely erratic, the Doctor's personality is undefined early on, with Davison getting a chance to flex his acting skills by briefly impersonating his four predecessors.
The scene in which the Doctor asks them to point out specific locations on a rough map of Castrovalva works very well, because their unsettled responses to what he is trying to show them begin to demonstrate that for all that they are fictional creations of a madman they are people in their own right.
The sets used for Castrovalva are impressive, and surprisingly well lit to resemble natural light, something of a rarity during Doctor Who in the eighties.

Castrovalva could have been pretty much what it seemed to be, and the climactic breaking-up of the environment could have just been caused by one of the Castrovalvans.
Castrovalva is a fascinating place and Mr Bidmead has lavished it with his usual attention to detail.
Castrovalva itself is a breathtaking design, not only being well-lit but well-designed, managing to make this a convincing and real town with wonderful Escher-inspired designs and architecture.

The Castrovalva plot strand is actually quite good and the designs and sets for the city are very good.
And anybody who claims that Castrovalva is scientifically accurate is suffering from the 2001 syndrome: Bad science in SF so bad that it fails to make sense altogether combined with some philosophical mumbo-jumbo is suddenly mistaken for something deep and meaningful.

At its heart, Castrovalva is still a childhood fantasy, but the child that created it is long gone.
The almost full-page rendering of this perfectly evokes the queasy, off-kilter feeling of the war torn Castrovalva, with Grahame framed against an immense, rocky bed and the path he's on vanishing beneath it.
The climax, where we discover the true nature of both Castrovalva and of Chris Grahames' circumstances, are a perfect example of this, the crisp line work of the previous pages being supplemented by a lush, detailed quality similar to painted work.

The entire world of Castrovalva resembled a bizarre sort of medieval utopia, a walled monastery of learning and hospitality that might have dominated in the Arthurian age.
And the city of Castrovalva itself (though only really consisting of three or four sets, I imagine) was profoundly notable for me. The square, with its limited space, still seemed to depict light and air in a Renaissance tile pattern.
"Castrovalva" is a good story, though I suspect it loses some its freshness on a second viewing, but worth seeing for the design values alone.

Wheras the fourth Doctor would have strode into Castrovalva and started confusing its populace with quips and sweets, his success was much more laid back, preferring to follow the lead of others and step in only when it was obviously necessary.
Unfortunately the success of CASTROVALVA meant the device would be used inappropriately in all further introduction stories, hampering the Baker and McCoy efforts to establish themselves in the role.
CASTROVALVA is a very rewarding adventure that dares to be different at a juncture where many other producers would have played it safe with an ultra-traditional monster tale.

Castrovalva serves as a worthy introduction to Peter Davison and Season 19.
The Doctor is taken to Castrovalva by the Master who creates this entire city and its people in order to get at the Doctor, which is very very hard to believe, but none the less happens.
It was the tail end of the Master trilogy, the three stories that ended the over-extended reign of Tom Baker and made this young viewer a fan.

I've seen all of the regen serials and the closest it's come to the Nine-to-Ten change was Four-to-Five in "Castrovalva".
Five was incapacitated for most of the serial and when he woke up, he sorted everything out in about twenty minutes.
Plus Castrovalva is really Logopolis episodes 5-8 (although that could work if you showed Logopolis to accompany Bad Wolf).
