Casualties of War is a good film, but inside is a great film trying to break out.
Eriksson’s War: A Conversation with Michael J. Fox (18 minutes) is a lengthy interview during which Fox discusses how he came to be involved with the film, describes his working relationship with Penn, and offers up numerous anecdotes regarding the actual shoot and the critical reaction to the film.
Casualties of War is a flawed film, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses, especially in this extended version.

Brian de Palma's film is based on a true incident during the war in Vietnam, in which some G.I.s decided to "reward" themselves for their efforts with a South Vietnamese girl, whom they proceeded to [attack], torture, and murder.
Her performance, indeed, makes "Casualties of War" unbearable, from her screams as she's taken in the fl of night, to her wide-eyed fear as she quakes when Michael J. Fox cleans her wounds.
"Casualties of War" is a masterpiece, and as I look at it again with fresh eyes on DVD, I'm still amazed it did not receive more acclaim.

The horrors of war have never been the easiest subjects to approach but these are stories that have to be told and ‘Casualties of War’ tells one of the most tragic and disturbing ones.
While there had been films before that dealt with war crimes but the abuse of prisoners during any conflict was always the domain of the enemy and not the US armed forces.
With performances from the ensemble cast that are first rate, this is a film that takes the telling of war atrocities to a new level and that any side should answer for their crimes.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Casualties of War | Deseret Morning News Web edition
Brian DePalma's "Casualties of War" is in some ways just what you might expect from the director of horror films ranging from "Carrie" to "Body Double" — as well as his breakthrough drama of two years ago, "The Untouchables."
"Casualties of War" is technically specific, manipulates the audience in a precise manner and is likely to touch some nerves that other — better — Vietnam films have not pricked.
And "Casualties" is much less flamboyant than "The Untouchables" or, say, "Dressed to Kill." This is DePalma at his most compact, and though there are occasional epic proportions, "Casualties" is in many ways a small story, working from a tight, economic screenplay by award-winning playwright David Rabe.

 MovieMartyr.com - Casualties of War
Instead of focusing on the dynamics of the group as most war movies would, DePalma chooses to point his attention squarely on the plight of Eriksson, embroiling him in a suspense situation that feels as if it could have been drawn from one of the director’s many Hitchcock-influenced thrillers.
Before long it becomes apparent that the movie is functioning as an emotionally controlled melodrama, with the sort of techniques most commonly attributed to directors like Douglas Sirk.
The incidents that lie at the center of Casualties clearly warp the psyche of Eriksson, and DePalma’s serious treatment of his predicament is one of the most compassionate moves in his career.

CASUALTIES OF WAR (1989) « Any Eventuality
Besides the improbable rarity of seeing a war movie filmed with a steadicam, and its unlikely but ingenious marriage to a soaring Morricone score that feels more like Donaggio’s classic collaborations with De Palma, Casualties of War also has one of the most interesting “messages” of Vietnam films.
It insists that right and wrong still exist even in a war full of terrible grays, yet it does so without over-simplifying the various motivations for war crimes, whether revenge (Sean Penn), sadism (Don Harvey), depravity (John C. Reilly), or intimidation (John Leguizamo).
And rather than depict a cover-up driven by evil intent, it presents more than one credible reason for ignoring the atrocity, not the least of which is protecting one’s own family.

Based on an allegedly true event that was reported in the New Yorker, Casualties is a stripped-down tale of a small platoon of Army grunts who head into the jungle only to lose their humanity, a trope that has traveled from Conrad to Coppola to here.
