It is characterised by a diversity of landscapes and natural habitats, as a result of the confluence of the different systems represented by the Rio de la Plata River and the Pampas plain: from the beaches with their fine yellow sand to the banks of murex and the swamps and marshlands.
These are reserves, which due to their natural attractions fulfil a double objective: To protect the environment as well as offer a space for recreation and education.
In such Reserves the maintenance of the natural ecosystems and the restoration or recuperation of degraded lands are of the utmost importance, since this will allow for their sustainability under the most natural conditions possible.

Krakatau Nature Reserve comprises the four islands of the Krakatau group which lie some 60km to the north between Java and Sumatra.
In 1980, the nature reserves of Ujung Kulon Peninsula, Panaitan Island, South Gunung Honje, North Gunung Honje and the Krakatau Islands were declared a Proposed National Park.
On 26 February, 1992, the nature reserves and a substantial addition to the marine reserve were formally combined and declared to be Ujung Kulon National Park under authority of the Minister of Forestry, Decree No.284/Kpts-II/1992.

This Reserve protects about 1500ha of coastal habitats between the estuaries of Rapid Creek and Buffalo Creek, in the Darwin area.

 Hornsby Shire Council - Crosslands Reserve
In 1924 Crosslands Reserve was described as "the most ideal spot on the river where access of turf covered banks slope down to the water's edge." Today Crosslands is a popular picnic and camping area close to Hornsby.
Crosslands reserve was flooded to a depth of 4.5 meters.
In 1987 the reserve was incorporated into Berowra Valley Bushland Park, forming 38 square kilometres of bushland, stretching from Pennant Hills to Berowra Waters.

 Towra Point Nature Reserve
Towra Lagoon is the largest fresh water wetland in the Reserve and once supported three species of dabbling duck and the endangered green and golden bell frog.
Another plant community found at Towra is the Swamp Oak forest which is characterised by tall Casuarina glauca trees as well as a species of Melaleuca ericifolia.
Beyond this is the Bangalay forest, pockets of which are scattered throughout the Reserve.

The recent move has added the rich mangrove forests of the Chwaka bay into the reserve making the ecosystem the largest conservation area in Zanzibar.
After years of commercial activities in the neighbouring areas, Jozani was officially declared a forest reserve in 1960.
The recent expansion were made in 1984 when most of the surrounding areas were gazetted hence bringing the total area to 2512 ha.
