Casuarinaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Members of this family are characterized by drooping equisetoid (meaning to look like Equisetum) twigs, are evergreen, and monoecious or dioecious.
The most widely used common name for Casuarinaceae species is sheoak or she-oak.
Casuarina equisetifolia L. is a widespread seashore tree known as Common Ironwood, Beefwood, Bull-oak, and Whistling-pine and is often planted as a windbreak.

 Untitled Document
Although the Casuarinaceae is sister to the Betulaceae and Myricaceae among the higher hamamelids, and all three families are infected by Cluster 1 frankiae, casuarina strains are not ubiquitous in soils (Diem and Dommergues, 1990).
This specificity could be due to the host plant selecting specific strains in the rhizosphere from among a population of strains, or more likely to environmental selection limiting the types of frankiae that are available in a particular soil.
In contrast to its nearest relatives in the Casuarinaceae, Gymnostoma spp.

 Fagales
A number of taxa have pollen walls with small granules clustered around the aperture near the inside (Feuer 1991), and several features of wood anatomy, including the presence of chambered crystals in the axial parenchyma (although this may properly be a feature of Fagales as a whole, are also common in the group (Carlquist 2002c).
Casuarinaceae [Ticodendraceae + Betulaceae]: dihydroflavonols +[?]; stigmas elongate.
Casuarinaceae are easily recognised, looking as they do rather like a conifer.

Endemic Casuarinaceae of New Caledonia. Ecological and nutritional characteristics.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Even though all the species of Casuarinaceae in New Caledonia nodulate, the percentage of N was not higher in the C. collina photosynthetic tissue than in those of the non-nodulating associated plants.
Because of their high diversity and their ecological particularities, the endemic Casuarinaceae of New Caledonia are particularly valuable for the rehabilitation of degraded soils and mine waste.
In addition to the endemic nature and exclusive occurrence on ultramafic substrates of Gymnostoma spp., the genus may also be associated with a new source of Frankia of unknown potential.
