The cataclysm is the Greek expression for the Biblical Great Flood of Noah, from the Greek kataklysmos, to "wash down." Erudite Bible studies drew it into the English language in 1633.
A cataclysm is merely one kind of catastrophe, best used when confined to a geological phenomenon of planetary significance.
In the novel series Dragonlance, the Cataclysm (Dragonlance) is a series of great disasters, primarily notable a great flood and a fiery mountain.

I think it's still the only Dragonlance supplement to actually sticks to the books, which is where I got started in RPGs way back when.
I _love_ Dragonlance, but the Tales of the Lance boxed set, like most of the stuff since the original novels and 14-module set, left me kinda cold.
Dragonlance is one of the most balanced and well thought out campaigns I have seen.

when i first atsrted reading dragonlance, i kept hearing about the cataclysm, but i feel that noone bothered to add any substantal backround to the event until this book.
It had been all too easy to picture the simplicity of the cataclysm after reading this book as before we knew the main facts in history not the Unsung Heroes of that time that were not recognise.
I am pleased that this work was made to express that time oh so long ago in krynn history this will become one of the true classics of this series as expected I Highly recommend reading this.

The Dragonlance campaign setting is one that is relatively unpopular and is just seen as "novels" nothing more.
Dragonlance just has the books, and is seemingly abandoned by WoTC for further ADandD2e or DandD3e projects.
The probable reason for Dragonlance to be disregarded by players as a good setting, is due to its narrowness and set path made by the novels.

In the Time of the Twins, as Par-Salian is showing the time travel spell to Ladonna and Justarius, there is a passage noting that this spell will not help prevent the Catacalysm and hints that it was tried.
But those would come from the Wizards of High Sorcery who were removed from influence in the area.
Could it be that the 'attempt' to stop the Cataclysm involved a mage giving the conspirators an ability to act without being noticed by smuggling them arcane items?

Because I know that they draw their arcane spells from the 3 moons and the moons are *really* the 3 gods of magic.
The gods took away their clerics immediately prior to the Cataclysm and stopped responding to appeals and prayers, but they weren't truly gone.
The Second Cataclysm notwithstanding (since thats an involuntary loss of arcane magic, not a willful withdrawl of it), I can't think of an instance when any arcane spellcaster has been denied his power by the deities of magic.
