The fishing village of Catalan Bay has been here for so long that no one really knows for certain where the name comes from, however there are a number of theories.
As far as we know, the first time the name "Catalan Bay" appears is in a plan produced in I 745, and the name also appears in a print published in 1750.
Today, the inhabitants of Catalan Bay arc mostly descended from Genoese fishermen, and the place very much retains the characteristics of a fishing village.

It covered a wide area, reaching from the shores of the bay to a point half-way up the northwestern slope of the rock; here the keep, a massive square tower, still stands and is known as the Moorish castle.
The land space available for the purposes of dockyard extension being very limited, a space of about 64 acres was reclaimed from the sea in front of the Alameda and the road to Rosia; some of the land reclaimed was as much as 40 ft. under water.
On the 7th of June took place an attack by Spanish fireships, which were successfully dealt with by the naval force in the bay under Captain Lesley of H.M. frigate " Enterprise." Up to October the state of things within the fortress was much what it had been after Rodney's success.

Catalan Bay is a small bay and fishing village on the eastern side of Gibraltar, on the far side of the Rock from the main city.
The name of the bay (Catalan) is relationed with a group of 350 militar catalan men who take the place in 1704.
Beyond Catalan Bay to the south is Sandy Bay, but the coast road now ends there, due to the closure of the Dudley Ward Tunnel for safety reasons in 2002.

Sun umbrellas are now being placed on both Catalan Bay beach and Camp Bay tables after the beach cleaners are finished, as the cleaners have instructions to remove any equipment left on the beaches.
This is once again creating an unfair situation in that most of the best spots are being taken by those who place their umbrellas early and then go away or by those who pay someone else to put up their umbrellas.
Life guards at both beaches confirmed that this is a daily happening, although the staff at Camp Bay confirmed that the police officer stationed at the beach will remove an unoccupied umbrella if asked to do so by a member of the public.
