Always, in the literary myths that have survived, the hero from the new Olympian age is seen to destroy the dragon, never to consult it; the dragon has been reinterpreted as having terrified and threatened the local populace (as the sea-dragon in the myth of Perseus and Andromeda).
This legend may be a Christianized version of the myth of Perseus, or of the mounted Phrygian god Sabazios vanquishing the chthonic serpent, but its origins are obscure.
It is possible that the dragon legends of northwestern Europe are at least partly inspired by earlier stories from the Roman Empire, or from the Sarmatians and related cultures north of the Black Sea.

Catalan (Català) or Valencian (Valencià) is a Romance language understood by as many as 12 million people in portions of Spain, France, Andorra and Italy, although the majority of active Catalan speakers are in Spain.
Catalan developed by the 9th century from Vulgar Latin on both sides of the eastern part of Pyrenees mountains (counties of Roussillon, Empuries, Besalú, Cerdagne, Urgell, Pallars and Ribagorça).
Catalan was exported in the 13th century to Balearic Islands and the newly created Valencian Kingdom by the Catalan and Aragonese invaders (note that the area of Catalan language still extends to part of what is now the region of Aragon).

In Catalan popular culture, there are a large number of myths and legends about witches (Catalan "bruixes").
Witches supposedly have "the mark of the devil" on their buttocks, made by a forceful bite of the Devil's teeth, which takes the form of two crossed horns, of a toad, of a ram with large horns, or of a simple little circle.
According to Catalan tradition (again, this may not be uniquely Catalan), one can wash marks on the skin with holy water in order to know whether they are the Devil's work: the Devil's mark will not wash off.

In seeking their origins it soon becomes apparent that here, myth, legend and historical fact intermingle and, as so often happens in studies of cartography, we have to start by going back to the earliest days of the Greek world.

Agnostics and atheists consider Luke and Acts to be nothing more than fantastic myths, written by and about superstitious, religious zealots.
But before the Christians call for a celebration of their victory in this two thousand year old debate, there's a catch: Gabriel's Gift also proves that Luke and Acts contain references to pagan myths and legends, some ancient, that were popular at the time Luke sat down to write his two books.
One of the most popular of ancient legends in the first century was the story of the war between the Greeks and Trojans and of the magnificent success of the Trojan Horse.
