 Comments on: maltese
David, re Valencia: The 2001 census says there were then 4.16M people living in the region, so if half the population did indeed have Valencian Catalan as their mother tongue, you’d be well on the way.
The problem with the statistics cited by the Catalan language activists is that they are used to create the impression among foreigners that they refer to people whose primary language is Catalan, when in fact they refer to just about anyone who has come into contact with the language.
Nic, you talk about anti-Catalan hatred, but schoolkids hear get taught anti-Castilian hatred.

Catalan Countries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As by historical, political, linguistic and cultural aspects it is more that demonstrable that the valencian people and the Kingdom of Valencia always have been independent from the catalan counties (nowadays "Catalonia"), the catalanist ones have intruded into the educational valencian system to spread their ideas from there.
This indoctrination effected to the valencian children tries to favor the catalan culture and the ideal ones of a "great Catalonia" while they conceal real valencian culture to the valencian children.
The catalanist imperialism wants to include the valencian people inside of the "catalan nation" and the catalanist ones spread the lie that the valencian people speak Catalan language but with the name of "Valencian".

 Idioma Valencià - SIXTH PART
It is a lie spread by the catalanist ones to confuse to the valencian people and that they accept without any opposition that in the educational system (colleges, institutes, universities) the Valencian children are studying an incongruous and artificial mixture of the Valencian language and the Catalan one, instead of the genuine Valencian language.
Because the "Valencian Academy of the Language" (A.V.L.) has elaborated a artful regulation for the Valencian language with a plenty of words and uses of the Catalan language which they are not proper to the Valencian language.
The Valencian language is losing its personality and its proper characteristics as consequence of the Catalanist regulation that nowadays the A.V.L. imposes to it.

 Idioma Valencià - FOURTH PART
As by historical, political, linguistic and cultural aspects it is more that demonstrable that the valencian people and the Kingdom of Valencia always have been independent from the catalan counties (nowadays "Catalonia"), the catalanist ones have intruded into the educational valencian system to spread their ideas from there.
They have not wanted to defend really to the Valencian language of the Political blackmail that the catalan governments and the catalan politicians systematically have done to the different central governments of the Spanish State.

 Catalan language - Wikipedia
Catalan was exported in the 13th century to Balearic Islands and the newly created Valencian Kingdom by the Catalan and Aragonese invaders (note that the area of Catalan language still extends to part of what is now the region of Aragon).
While professing the unity of the Catalan language, the Spanish government claimed to be constitutionally bound to produce distinct Catalan and Valencian versions because the Statute of the Autonomous Community of Valencia calls the regional language "Valencian", while that of Catalunya calls its regional language "Catalan".
Croatian of whether Catalan and Valencian constitute different languages or merely dialects has been the subject of political agitation several times after the Franco era by extreme right wing parties in the area of the city of Valencia.

Catalan language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Catalan was exported in the 13th century to the Balearic Islands and the newly created Valencian Kingdom by the Catalan and Aragonese invaders (note that the area of Catalan language still extends to part of what is now the region of Aragon).
The issue, as with Serbian and Croatian, of whether Catalan and Valencian constitute different languages or merely dialects has been the subject of political agitation several times after the Franco era.
Nevertheless, differences do exist: the accent of a Valencian is recognisable, there are differences in subjunctive terminations, and there are a large number of words unique to Valencian; but those differences are not any wider than among North-Western Catalan and Eastern Catalan.
