The Cataract Gorge Reserve is one of Launceston and northern Tasmania's premier tourist attractions.
The chairlift crossing the Gorge is the longest single span chairlift in the world, with the longest span being 308 m (924 ft).
It broke down in 2001, and several sightseers were stranded 30 metres above the Gorge for several hours, but since then it has been thoroughly overhauled and is still in use today.

Launceston's Cataract Gorge extends from the mouth of the South Esk river at King's Bridge and winds it's way up the river to the Trevallyn hydro electric dam 5 kilometres upstream.
On the north side of the river is well constructed path that clings to the sheer rock face of the gorge.
There is also a hiking track on the northern side of the gorge adjacent to the houses of Trevallyn.

I was impressed with the gallery, too, and its permanent collection - although reflections in the space where the masters were hung made some of them difficult to see.
If you're going to Launceston for the exhibition, do the tourist thing and visit stunning Cataract Gorge and take a look at City Park, which is one of the better public gardens in Australia.

The Cataract Gorge suspension bridge in northern Tasmania is likely to remain closed until flood waters peak in the Esk River over the next few days.
The Launceston City Council closed the bridge on Saturday as 1,200 cubic metres of water per second spilled from Trevallyn Dam into the gorge.
The mayor, Janie Dickenson, says the movement of floodwaters is attracting hundreds of people, but the bridge is only able to cope with about 60 people at a time.
