Olfaction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Among mammals it is well developed in the carnivores and ungulates, who must always be aware of each other, and in those, such as moles, who smell for their food.
It is less well developed in the catarrhine primates (Catarrhini), and nonexistent in cetaceans, who in compensation have a sensitive and well-developed sense of taste.
In many species olfaction is highly tuned to pheromones; a male silkworm moth, for example, can smell a single molecule of bombykol.

 Biological Anthropology | Primate Glossary
Catarrhini is the infraorder of the Old World monkeys, apes, and hominids.
Along with the geographical distinction, catarrhines can be distinguished from platyrrhines by their narrow nose shape, fewer premolar teeth, and lack of a prehensile tail.
Members of this group can be told apart from the catarrhines by their broad nose shape, greater number of premolar teeth, and the fact that several species have prehensile tails.

Ape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However there are also primates in other families that lack tails.
Both great apes and lesser apes fall within Catarrhini, which also includes the Old World monkeys of Africa and Eurasia.
Within this group, both families of apes can be distinguished from these monkeys by the number of cusps on their molars (apes have five—the "Y-5" molar pattern, Old World monkeys have only four in a "bilophodont" pattern).

By restricting their evolution to a shape similar to that of primates, dinosaurs with human-like properties were devised.
Using the genes of the Catarrhini group (humans, monkeys and apes), genetic manipulation was performed on the dinosaur DNA, altering muscles and skeletal framework.
Genetically manipulated for amphibious qualities that would allow survival on both land and water, the Miaplacidus is an aggressive creature with a sharp dorsal fin.

The only difference between the reconstructed Catarrhini and Platyrrhini ancestral sequences is residue 12 (P in the former and L in the latter).
As the residue at this position is L in the rat and the cat (the only other species possessing mitochondrial AGT in which the gene has been sequenced), it is likely that the ancestral anthropoid sequence also had L at this position
The situation for the Catarrhini appears to be much more complicated.

The living haplorhines are divided into three infraorders the Tarsiiformes, or tarsiers, a very controversial group; the Platyrrhini, or New World monkeys; and the Catarrhini, or Old World monkeys, apes and humans.
Like the word Platyrrhini, Catarrhini refers to the shape of the nose and means down-facing nose.
The nostrils are narrow, close together, and face downward.
