In fact, Catawba worm farmers go to great lengths to ensure their trees become infested (perhaps occupied is a better term.) An occupied Catalpa tree can produce hundreds of caterpillars each year that can be harvested and used for bait either alive, or preserved frozen.
Based on our field-testing, we have categorized three methods for using Catawba worms, based upon the relative activity level of the catfish, and to a lesser extent the type of water you are fishing in.

Arkansas News Bureau - Bait fishermen take to those catalpa worms
Catalpa worms are the young of the hawk or sphinx moth and feed exclusively on the leaves of catalpa trees as well as being an efficient fishing bait.
The worms are large and fl and green in color, something along the line of a tomato hornworm without the horn.
The name catalpa is a mangling of Catawba, a tribe of Native Americans in the southeastern portion of the United States.

 RoguePundit: Random Nature #43
The catawba worm, a common bait in the Southeast, is actually a hornworm which consumes the catalpa tree (also sometimes known as the Indian Cigar Tree for its seed pods, which some Native Americans supposedly used to smoke as a hallucinogen).
In fact, people actually farm catalpa trees and work to ensure they are infested with catawba worms that they can then collect and sell.
If you want catawba worms in the offseason, pack the worms in cornmeal or sawdust and then freeze them...and then you can actually revive your bait whenever you want.

Catalpa tibetica } Catalpa (Catalpa), also spelled Catawba, is a genus of mostly deciduous trees of the United States, West Indies, and east Asia, in the flowering plant family Bignoniaceae.
The name derives from the Catawba Native American name catawba for these trees (the tribal totem), with the spelling Catalpa being due to a transcription error on the part of the describing botanist (Scopoli) making the first formal scientific description of the genus.
The tree is the home to the Catawba worm whereby the leaves are eaten by the worm.
