Catch-22 (logic) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Catch 22 has become a term, inspired by Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22, describing a general situation in which A must have been preceded by B, and B must have been preceded by A.
The prototypical Catch 22 considers the case of a U.S. Army Air Force bombardier who wishes to be excused from combat flight duty.
In moving from school to a career, one may encounter a Catch 22 where one cannot get a job without work experience, but one cannot gain experience without a job.

There was only one catch, and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind.
It's an example of Catch-22, although the catch is not explicitly mentioned in this connection.
Catch-22 is a wonderful book, full of dark humor and absurdity, satirizing war, military bureaucracy, and by extension modern life and the ways in which they destroy the human spirit.

The central character in "Catch 22" (which you really ought to read, by the way) is the pilot Yossarian, whose all-too-accurate perception of the futility and insanity of war leads him to seek a psychiatric exemption from flying further combat missions.
"Catch 22" is the title of a novel published in 1961, written by Joseph Heller and based on his experiences as a World War II bomber pilot in Europe.
I am supposing that your not knowing what "Catch 22" means is evidence of your relative youth because the phrase is of fairly recent vintage and made quite a splash when it arrived in common usage.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - HYPOCRISY - Catch 22
Catch 22” keeps a really equal level from the beginning to the end and if there’s one thing we could reproach it, in comparison with earlier works, is the absence of a real highlight.
First of all, I would like to make clear that HYPOCRISY is one of the bands I most admire and respect and until I knew about Tägtgren’s side project PAIN for the first time, I thought about that man as a genius unable to do something wrong.
It is also a mostly monotonous release, lacking brutal discharges and clean ballads (though “Edge Of Madness” and “All Turns Black” make mild attempts), being all the songs in a similar tempo and sharing the musical concept.

from Rockville MD I recall hearing Catch 22 author Joseph Heller state that he started writing the book by writing the ending first and then working on the beginning and so on, back and forth.
I'm not sure if he was telling the truth, but the book is certainly based on his own experiences as a bomber pilot in WWII and the book/movie's nonlinear, stream of consciousness structure is an obvious demonstration of the randomness and madness of war.
