Topic: Catch the Moon

  NASA - Moon
The highlands are the original crust of the moon, shattered and fragmented by the impact of meteoroids, asteroids, and comets.
The remaining portion of the moon that faces Earth is faintly visible because of earthshine, sunlight reflected from Earth to the moon.
Regolith overlies all the bedrock on the moon.

Why does the Moon have Phases?
Rather, the phases of the Moon are produced by the alignment of the Moon and the Sun in the sky.
At full, the moon is 180 degrees from the sun and at last quarter, it is 90 degrees west of the sun.
The new moon is essentially invisible because it is between the earth and sun and therefore lost in the glare of the sun.

 Moon Calculator (MoonCalc)
Moon Calculator (MoonCalc) is a DOS program which provides information relating to the position, age, phase, orientation, appearance and visibility of the moon for any given date, time and location on earth.
Graphical displays showing the position of the moon on a star chart and the position of the moon in a simulated local sky (horizon view or traditional circular sky-chart view) can be produced and printed out.
A close-up of the near side of the moon (showing orientation of the moon's limbs and position of the lunar craters), correct for a given observation site, is also provided.

SPACE.com -- Moon Mechanics: What Really Makes Our World Go 'Round
The Moon stabilizes Earth's rotation, for example, preventing otherwise dramatic movements of the poles that would fuel climate swings that some scientists figure might have doomed any chance for life to form, let alone evolve.
Here's the kicker: On the side of Earth opposite the Moon, the force of the Moon's gravity is less than at the center of the Earth, because of the greater distance.
When the Moon is at a 90-degree angle to the Sun in our sky (at first quarter or last quarter) tides tend to be mellower.

Astronomers found that the moon movement is 18 kilometers per a second, the Earth movement is 15 kilometers per a second, whereas the sun movement is 12 kilometers per a second.
And the moon we have measured for her Mansions (to traverse) Till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date – stalk.
Because the speed of the moon is 18 kilometers and that of the earth is 15 kilometers while that of the sun is 12 kilometers.

 Moon Illusion
This "moon illusion" is mind-baffling since the horizon and elevated moons are actually the same size and distance away from earthly viewers.
Try and catch the moon just as it clears the horizon and again a little later when it's high in the sky.
The moon suddenly appears to be small because our brain locates it at the nearby distance of the edges of the aperture.

Fisherfolks using set-net to catch fish may soon find the changing phases of the moon critical to their livelihood after a study showed that the lunar cycle actually helps indicate a fruitful fish catch.
The moon, being a source of myths even from thousands of years ago, is often blamed for a number of occurrences, including lunacy and menstrual cycles.
The results of the study showed that the largest amount of catch was during full moon, and the last quarter, with the most catch recorded during the last quarter.

ET, but the first hour or so won't be noticeable as the moon becomes lightly shaded by Earth's outer shadow, called the penumbra.
They can occur only during a full moon, and only on the relatively rare occasions when the moon's orbit carries it into the same plane of space as Earth's path around the sun.
During totality, when the moon is completely immersed in shadow, it might turn red, the result of Earth's atmosphere bending hints of all the world's sunrises and sunsets simultaneously onto the moon while the sun's primary light is blocked.

The Soviets, with their own competing moon program and an intense economic and political and military rivalry with the USA, could be expected to have cried foul if the USA tried to fake a Moon landing.
In early November 2002 NASA announced that it was cancelling publication of a manuscript by Jim Oberg that was intended to refute the claims that the Moon landings were a hoax.
The major point which has helped convince me that the moon landing was faked was the fact that when the control room asked a question to the Astronauts the replies were instant with no delays.

To help refine the model that is used, and create a massive experiment in the process, HMNAO would like as many people as possible to spot the crescent Moon and submit the sighting to the Moon Watch website.

 Approximate position of the Moon
The position of the Moon in the sky can be predicted to within a third of its apparent diameter of the 'true' position as found using sophisticated methods.
The user is prompted for the latitude and longitude of their location, and the year, month, day and time in UT for which the Moon's position is wanted.
By comparing the approximate method with refraction adjusted positions, I am attempting to compare the position of the Moon as observed against the stars with the position predicted by the low precision method.

I agree we should let the Indians go to the moon, not the likes of former FM Singh, who can do a lot more good on earth, but the few militants who make use of a bogus China Threat to radicalize their people.
We must warn the Indian rocket scientists however not to use too powerful boosters in getting their craft on and off the moon, or the moon might just deviate 0.1 degree off course, and begin to spiral either towards the earth or away into outer space.
Remember, while the moon is a lot bigger than their proposed craft, it is a lot smaller than the earth.

The RSPB says climate change is making matters worse, with some industrial fish species starving as the seas warm.
Industrial fishing catches millions of tonnes of small fish which congregate in dense shoals - species like sandeels, sprats and anchovies - to turn into meal and oil, much of it to feed farmed fish.
The fish caught are a key part of the marine food chain, but the RSPB says we know little about the effects of industrial fishing.
