The 13,600-hectare lands in Cateel, Davao Oriental are by the Mandayas (an ethnic minority), by their ancestors, the Lumads or these people left behind by the trails of modern civilisation.
The reforestation project covers 10 barangays in Cateel, 13 in Baganga, and 2 in Boston, all in Davao Oriental.
The local government of Cateel had already made a resolution for cancellation of the agreement addressed to Sec Ramos, as forwarded by the provincial board of Davao Oriental, but Ramos remains unmoved.

DAVAO Oriental 1st district Rep. Corazon Malanyaon expressed fear of an impending tragedy in her hometown in Cateel, Davao Oriental due to rampant illegal logging activities.
In an interview here in Davao City Monday, Malanyaon said it is likely that a tragedy similar to that in Ormoc could happen in Cateel if authorities do not stop illegal logging there.
She said she have the whole town as witnesses to the illegal logging activities in Cateel but no one is willing to complain or execute affidavit for fear of reprisal.

Latiban, who is the vice chair of the Council of Elder Leaders of Cateel and also chair of the Cateel Mandaya Tribe Inc., said in her affidavit that the site being logged is part of the area claimed by lumads as Mandayan ancestral domain, whose resources have to be protected.
Latiban said she was accompanied by foresters Henry Yap and Gilbert Dragas of the Cenro (Community Environment and Natural Resources Office)-Baganga to Abejod to seize the logs and arrest the suspects.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports from Cateel indicated that hauling of logs confiscated from Abejod to the municipal grounds of Cateel was being resisted by a group of armed men, allegedly associated with the vice mayor.

Felipe Berroya, commander of the Army’s 701st Infantry Brigade, told The STAR yesterday the rebels fired on the 18 casualties and seven other soldiers after the dump truck they were riding hit a landmine on the way to the Cateel town proper.
The 25 soldiers were sent to Cateel from the nearby town of Caraga to reinforce troops pursuing NPA rebels who had set fire to four telecommunication relay stations in Mawab town in Compostela Valley, he added.
Berroya said seven soldiers led by one Army Lt. Paule returned fire with the overturned dump truck as cover and were able to kill 10 rebels during the ensuing firefight that lasted three hours.

 The road to Aliwagwag
I was mesmerized by — oh well — the almost deserted beach of Tarragona, the awesome story of how the sun’s first rays in the new millennium shone in Santiago, Caraga, thereby referred to as “First Millennium Sunrise Site”; as well as the municipality’s efforts in preserving tribal wisdom in its Mandaya Tribal Community.
This to complete my southern Philippines expedition that began in Butuan, Agusan del Norte; passing by Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur; Tagum, Davao del Norte; Compostela Valley, to Cateel in Davao Oriental where I caught a glimpse and took a taste of Aliwagwag Falls’ rapids.
Aliwagwag Falls in barrio Aliwagwag, Cateel is a towering waterfalls reportedly considered by hydraulic engineers as the “highest in the country” and regarded as one of the most beautiful falls this side of Mindanao.
