A multimode fiber optic cable design in which the index of refraction of the core is lower toward the outside of the core and progressively increases toward the center of the core, thereby reducing modal dispersion of the signal.
Also called far-end unbalance attenuation, measures cable balance by the comparison of the signal appearing across the pair to the signal between ground and the pair, where the applied signal is at the opposite end of the cable from where the across pair signal is measured.
On Ethernet 10Base5 thick coaxial cable, a tap is a method of connecting a transceiver to the cable by drilling a hole in the cable, inserting a contact to the center conductor, and clamping the transceiver onto the cable at the tap.

Category 5 cable commonly known as Cat 5 is an unshielded twisted pair type cable designed for high signal integrity.
Cat 5 cable typically three twists per inch of each twisted of 24 gauge copper wires within the Another important characteristic is that the wires insulated with a plastic (FEP) that has low dispersion that is the dielectric constant of the plastic does not depend on frequency.
It is often used in structured cabling computer networks such as fast Ethernet although it is often used to many other signals such as basic voice services token ring and ATM (at up to 155 Mbits /s over short distances).

Category 3 cabling, at just 16 MHz, was originally intended for slower computer networking protocols like old-style Ethernet.
But because there are no extended performance Cat 5 outlets and patch panels to connect to these premium cables, there are no guarantees the resulting system can perform at that rating.

The cable design engineer's task is to create a high-performance cable that meets not only the electrical requirements of Category 5, but also the fire safety requirements required for plenum and nonplenum cables as defined by the NEC guidelines.
A cable systems' designer should consider electrical characteristics and margins of performance when evaluating Category 5 cables and to evaluate the fire safety for the cable under consideration for plenum installation.
The result is a Category 5 cable with a composite core construction, generally referred to as a "2x2" construction - two pairs using FEP and two pairs using the flame retardant ployolefin.

Stranded cable may be used in patch cables, but stranded cable is more likely to cause attenuation and should be used for as short a run as possible.

But at 3 1/2 miles a normal 26H88 cable would have 3 sets of 88mH loading coils (every 6000 feet, that is what the "H" in 26H88 means), and you would be hard pressed to get a PCM modem to work on that cable, much less at anything like the speeds you are indicating.

How to Make a Category 5 /5e Patch Cable
Since Gigabit networks over copper cabling are in their infancy, and no one can say for sure, we would advise our customers to take the safe approach on all future patch cable orders.
Perfectly good patch cables that have been working fine for years, get removed from their installation, and re-installed on the same, or different network.
When these cables are removed and re-installed, they can either completely loose their connection, or develop intermittent problems.

Category 5 distributed cable that meets ANSI/EIA/TIA-568-A building wiring standards can be a maximum of 328 feet (ft.) or 100 meters (m) in length, divided as follows:
A twisted pair Ethernet network operating at 10 Mbits/second (10BASE-T) will often tolerate low-quality cables, but at 100 Mbits/second (10BASE-Tx) the cable must be rated as Category 5, or Cat 5, by the Electronic Industry Association (EIA).
In addition, there are restrictions on maximum cable length for both 10- and 100-Mbits/second networks.
