Although the number of deaths among persons with AIDS declined during 1996--2000, the magnitude of decline varied by region and exposure category; the number of deaths declined among persons with AIDS in all racial/ethnic groups.
During 1996--1997, the estimated number of deaths among persons with AIDS declined 42%; during 1998--2000, declines were smaller (5% during 1998--1999 and 10% during 1999--2000) (Table).
Monitoring the entire spectrum of HIV disease, including the number of new HIV infections, progression of HIV infection to AIDS, and deaths among persons with AIDS, is critical for evaluating prevention efforts aimed at reducing the number of new HIV infections and preventing morbidity and mortality among persons living with HIV.

New Mexico can certainly do better than the 300 Lives goal, and should, as there is no room for timidity in a category that has produced record high death counts in recent years, killing 305 more people in 1995-2000 than in 1989-1994.
Table 4 presents a comparison of results of the Department's goals to those of its own Highway Safety and Performance Plan 2001- 2005 (released in September 2000) and the Highway Safety and Performance Plan 2000-2005 released in October 1999.
In New Mexico's Plan, the Department re-expressed its traffic safety goals (page 25) for traffic deaths and alcohol-related crash deaths in terms of deaths per 100 million vehicle miles.

 TPC NHC BERTHA 1996 PRELIMINARY REPORT
Bertha was an early-season Cape Verde Hurricane that moved across the islands of the northeastern Caribbean Sea as a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson scale and made landfall on the North Carolina coast near Wilmington as a category 2 hurricane.
Moving northward and re-accelerating to a forward speed of 15 knots, Bertha made landfall at 2000 UTC on the 12th on the coast of North Carolina, with the center crossing the coast midway between Wrightsville and Topsail Beaches.
Bertha is responsible for an estimated eight deaths and $250 million in U.S. damages.

 Hypothermia-Related Deaths --- Suffolk County, New York, January 1999--March 2000, and United States, 1979--1998
This report presents case reports of four hypothermia-related deaths during January 1999--March 2000 in Suffolk County (1999 population: 1,383,847), the largest county in New York excluding New York City, and summarizes hypothermia-related deaths in the United States during 1979--1998.
Suffolk County ranked fifth among New York's 62 counties in number of hypothermia-related deaths for persons of all ages.
In addition, in New York and Suffolk County, hypothermia-related death rates increased by age category and were higher among men, similar to trends observed in the United States.

A study of 1,476 NTSB airplane category fatal accident reports for the period of January 1, 1996 through January 1, 2000, resulted in 108 incidents of spatial disorientation.
