 Aircraft
The vast majority of flights flown around the world each day belong to the general aviation category, ranging from recreational balloon flying to civilian flight training to business trips to firefighting to medevac flights to cargo transportation on freight aircraft.
The major distinction in aircraft usage is between military aviation, which includes all uses of aircraft for military purposes (such as combat, patrolling, search and rescue, reconnaissance, transport, and training), and civil aviation, which includes all uses of aircraft for non-military purposes.
Fixed-wing aircraft generally use an internal-combustion engine in the form of a piston engine (with a propeller) or a turbine engine (jet or turboprop), to provide thrust that moves the craft forward through the air.

Dassault Aviation does not build the world's biggest or smallest business jets, but it holds a very strong position in the upper-middle sector of the market with a closely packed family of four aircraft.

While Dassault does not usually release numbers for orders and deliveries, the company did announce a record 97 orders in 1997 - a figure boosted by a late-year announcement of an order from Executive Jet Aviation (EJA) for 24 Falcon 2000s, to be used in its North American fractional ownership program.

Many so-called "aviation deaths" in this era are from parachuting exhibitions/failures—I have excluded these, as not being directly due to aviation.
As much as possible, I have also excluded persons on the ground struck and killed by aircraft, though in some cases it has not been possible to determine whether people were in this category or in the airplane.
At various times, and in various groups of aviators, the death rate was as high as 87%, though the overall death rate was of course much lower than that.
